Bug ID: 35119 Summary: 1.7.8: all games crash since yesterday Product: Wine Version: 1.7.8 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: blocker Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: dentaku@web.de Classification: Unclassified
Just 3 days ago I upgraded to wine 1.7.8 to fix the steam startup crash. After installing wine 1.7.8 steam worked again and the games also worked. Today, I bootet my computer again and Ubuntu updates and steam updates went in. After that no game works anymore!
There are lots of erros in the terminal - just a few when trying to start several games (Tomb Raider, Zeno Clash 2, ..):

--- Comment #1 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- Not a blocker. Can you reproduce this with a clean WINEPREFIX? If you can reproduce it with a demo/free download, that would also be helpful.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35119
--- Comment #2 from DenTaKu dentaku@web.de --- Yes, the same behaviour with a clean wine prefix.

--- Comment #3 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net --- Hello DenTaKu,
you are probably the only one here with that problem. There have been no further reports of that kind.
I checked with my Steam install and updates .. everything works fine.
My guess: some Ubuntu packages failed to update/cleanup properly or installed broken stuff (maybe it was already partially broken before and is now in 'final' stage of brokenness).
Try removing Wine package(s) and prefixes completely and reinstall everything again.
BTW ... the bug summary is not really useful. 'yesterday' changes the meaning every day.

--- Comment #4 from DenTaKu dentaku@web.de --- Well, the bug report has a date - so "yesterday" is quite exact. I just wanted to note that it just happens without any changes on my side - just updates from Ubuntu and Steam. I already reinstalled steam and used fresh wine prefix but with no success. I will try to redownload the games but they have multiple gigabytes - through slow internet connection. :-(

--- Comment #5 from Matt mattcbro@earthlink.net --- Steam is definitely messed up for me. I'm on Linux Mint 16 64 bit. Steam will hang on authentication. The upgrade to wine 1.7.8 is supposed to fix it, but it does not.
It works for a little while and then something gets corrupted and the original problem resumes. The corruption is outside of steam and even the prefix, but is somewhere within linux.
First I have a clean 32 bit prefix and I have wine 1.7.8. $ wine --version wine-1.7.8
I start steam: $ WINEPREFIX=~/.wine32 WINEARCH=win32 wine "c:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe"
bunch of fixme's and then the first telltale error: [1216/034438:ERROR:resource_bundle.cc(417)] Failed to load C:\Program Files\Steam\bin\chrome.pak Some features may not be available.
Wasn't this supposed to be fixed with 1.7.8? Maybe not. Later there is this error: [1216/034438:ERROR:network_change_notifier_win.cc(126)] WSALookupServiceBegin failed with: 8
and these err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {77f10cf0-3db5-4966-b520-b7c54fd35ed6} not registered err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {77f10cf0-3db5-4966-b520-b7c54fd35ed6} could be created for context 0x1
there are a few more fixmes that go by and errors of the last type and it never finishes authenticating. It just hangs.
Unfortunately steam is a key reason to even be using wine and it simply doesn't work.

--- Comment #8 from Matt mattcbro@earthlink.net --- Sorry about that last paste. I got confused about how to transfer the output from the console.
The bottom line is that steam under wine 1.7.8 appears to now work intermittently, whereas on windows it works almost every time as does the native steam client.
The error flags and fixme printouts in both instances are nearly the same, so I'm not certain how much help they will be. Any suggestions as to how to isolate this are fair game; I'm willing to try.
You might pass this off as a steam issue, but please keep in mind the very different experience one has using either the native client or windows.

I don't think it's necessarily a Steam issue, but I would say that it's unlikely to be wine since only two people have reported it, both on Ubuntu/Mint, after updating Steam and other packages.

Well I haven't been able to reproduce the bug. Moreover I have made no changes to the install or to any of my prefixes. Additionally, as of yesterday both the pristine 32 bit prefix, and my prefix loaded up with MS .dll's and dotnet stuff all are launching steam and authenticating properly.
Maybe steam updated something since the last update? Wine is still at 1.7.8.0-ubuntu-saucy. If the issue recurrs I will run it with the debug flags turned on to see. Perhaps Valve did something at their end which allows steam to authenticate running under wine.

--- Comment #13 from ehabcharek@hotmail.com --- Hello, I switched to ubuntu on the day windows stopped support for XP and since then I've been using the windows version of steam on ubuntu. It was working perfectly until I upgraded to ubuntu 14.04. I'm now having (I think) the same problem. Steam starts with no fonts (fixed it with a -no-dwrite at the end of the shortcut/ launch command) and the game I want to play most (The Hidden: Source 4b which is a Source Base SDK 2006 game) crashes when AND ONLY WHEN I hit a key on the keyboard. I tried removing and reinstalling steam and the game, did the (rm -rf .wine) thing and nothing seems to work. Please help? I also tried many versions of wine (the latest being 1.7.17)
