I dont have the computer with me, it is my girlfriend's but I will find out how the xserver was setup, it probably wasn't since I had just installed it before installing wine.

Is this still an issue in current (1.2-rc2 or newer) Wine?
Tried with the RCT2 demo -- linux/nvidia 9800/nvidia 256.xx drivers/wine-1.3.0
Works fine with emulated desktop mode enabled - can change resolution in game options no problem.
Disabling emulated desktop mode results in crash at startup, so this problem does still seem apparent....(with the demo version) -- will grab a debuglog and attach here directly..

No update for over 900 days. No download Is this still an issue in 1.5.30 or is this abandoned ?
...it still appears to be a problem wrt wine-1.5.30 on debian wheezy with nvidia 310.xx drivers..although the behavior (still) continues to change. Wrt the demo, it always starts reliably with emulated desktop mode enabled -- ingame options will expose 4:3 aspect video modes up to 1280x1024 ; they work...
..with emulated desktop mode *disabled*, the game simply tries to initialize and hits a blackscreen -- sometimes it will popup an 'error trapper' window letting you know the "windows unknown driver" failed in some way...but no go....(native display res is 1680x1050)...
..conversely, with emulated desktop mode *disabled* and with the default primary display resolution set to 1024x768 (via nvidiaconfig gui), the game *will* launch successfully -- further, the ingame video options will now also display some widescreen resolutions (1280x720, 1280x960, ..), however if you try to select one of these, an error pops up saying 'unable to switch mode' or such...
..ftr, the demo version I used is available on cnet -> http://download.cnet.com/RollerCoaster-Tycoon-2/3000-2119_4-10194120.html (use the direct link) <- and the original CD version which I own (+ nocd) behaves pretty much the same... (that is to say the demo download includes trymedia drm portions the original does not)...(and you may need ie6 in the same wineprefix to get that drm to go)
...oh, and munging xorg.conf to include "Modes" lines for 8, 16 & 24bit depths @ the various resolutions to game looks for doesn't seem to help any... ;)

--- Comment #11 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- Using the demo from: http://www.download-free-games.com/simulation/rollercoaster_tycoon2.htm
on wine-1.7.36/i915/Mesa 10.4.2, starting the application without a virtual desktop, I hear the sound, but it doesn't take focus. Manually clicking the window, it then takes focus and everything seems okay.
On exit, it crashes though.

--- Comment #12 from winetest@luukku.com --- Fresh prefix, used the Austin's download link.
On 1st run I got some popup message about drivers (??). Windows unknown driver? I set windows mode into xp after this and relaunch the game and it goes into somekind of game menu with no issues, exiting the game seems to show the same popup message.
I have no focus issue. I didnt test virtual desktop.
I can't replicate the focus issue or having to use virtual desktop.
wine 2.1-git.

--- Comment #13 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr --- Does the bug still occur with wine-5.14? For me, the demo http://www.download-free-games.com/simulation/rollercoaster_tycoon2.htm crashes very early.

--- Comment #14 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr --- Works fine with wine-7.0-rc3. Reported fixed three times (also comment 6 and 12). Can an administrator close this bug as FIXED?

--- Comment #15 from Rosanne DiMesio dimesio@earthlink.net --- Not fixed here. Without a virtual desktop it crashes at start with a popup message about an unknown driver and changes my desktop resolution to 800x600, which I then have to manually reset. With a virtual desktop it starts without any errors and seems to run okay, though I didn't really try to play it. I tested it in a virtual desktop at several different resolutions, including my monitor's native resolution of 1920x1200, and the game had no problem starting at any of them, but in all cases it changed the virtual desktop's resolution to 800x600 when starting.
Tested the demo in 7.0-rc3, NVIDIA 460.73.01 driver, openSUSE 15.2.

Can you try with nouveau driver.
No. Someone with a working nouveau will have to test that.
