Summary: Team Fortress 2 crashes after running for several minutes at 1680x1050 Product: WineHQ Apps Database Version: unspecified Platform: PC-x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: appdb-unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: sternn@uhacc.org
Created an attachment (id=12490) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=12490) Console output from TF2 crash
Running TF2 fullscreen at 1680x1050 results in hl2.exe crashing, forcing the user to kill the hl2.exe process (now defunct). This happens regardless of the graphics settings used or dxlevel chosen (but screen res is 1680x1050).

--- Comment #1 from Chris Morgan cmorgan@alum.wpi.edu 2008-04-26 11:54:49 --- Looks like a Wine bug, not an appdb bug.

--- Comment #2 from Lei Zhang thestig@google.com 2008-04-26 13:08:46 --- Does changing the resolution help? Do other HL 2 based games crash as well?
What Nvidia card / driver version are you using?

--- Comment #3 from Lei Zhang thestig@google.com 2008-04-26 13:09:04 --- Also, what version of Wine?

--- Comment #4 from sternn sternn@uhacc.org 2008-04-26 13:29:00 --- Wine version: 0.9.60 (also happened in 0.9.58) Card: MSI N9600GT-T2D1G (Geforce 9600GT w/ 1GB) Driver: 171.06 beta (GF9600 unsupported in official driver) GCC version: gcc version 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2 p1.0.2)
Changing to 1440x900 prevents the crash, and can play for hours w/ no problems.
I have tried to reproduce this only with HL2:E1, but it did not crash.

--- Comment #5 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com 2008-04-26 13:51:19 --- Not an appdb bug.
Is there a demo showing the problem?

--- Comment #6 from sternn sternn@uhacc.org 2008-04-26 17:34:02 --- You mean a video of the crash occurring? I'm not sure how I would go about that.

No, I mean a demo of the game that others can download and test with that shows the problem.

Demo stops approximately 5 seconds before the game crashed.

I upgraded to a newer kernel, nvidia driver, and wine version. Now running kernel 2.6.25, nvidia driver 173.08 beta (required for 2.6.25), and wine-0.61.
The crash happens in exactly the same fashion (1680x1050). Changing to 1440x900 prevents this completely.
I feel I should note that I am running with 4GB RAM on an Intel Q6600 (Core 2 Quad) CPU. I understand win32 apps can only use 2GB tops, but I'm not sure if that factors into this.

--- Comment #12 from gavintlgold puttabutta@gmail.com 2008-06-17 11:41:02 --- I think I have gotten this crash before. Not sure if it's related though: When I play now with the new Steam update, the game will (almost) consistently slow down, get slower and slower, until finally it only plays while the cursor is moving. This of course keeps me from playing at all because everyone else moves while I'm stuck (and wiggling the mouse doesn't work so well.
Another interesting note about this is from that point on, even if I'm not playing a game, the animations on the menus also don't go until I move the mouse. The sound skips too while this happens.
Should I open another bug, or has it been reported elsewhere?

I'm just going to go ahead and do that because I think it's a different issue that no one has reported yet.

--- Comment #14 from Matt Smith mreedsmith@gmail.com 2008-12-15 05:50:51 --- This bug has followed me through several versions of wine (currently 1.1.10), kernels, etc. It only occurs in TF2 and only at 1680x1050 (I was problem-free with my last monitor at 1600x1200). Making hl2.exe run with wine acting as windows 98 prevents the crash (but also ruins performance). Launching the game with -dxlevel 81 has no effect. The game will not run with the pixel shader turned off. I haven't been able to find a cause for this bug, but it may be tied to a certain amount of mouse/keyboard input. Also, the game now crashes cleanly instead of leaving a defunct hl2.exe.

--- Comment #16 from Stanly Ibkis bloodyiron@shaw.ca 2009-03-11 09:12:47 --- I am seeing instability at 1920x1200. 16:10 seems to be in general unstable.

--- Comment #17 from Matt Smith mreedsmith@gmail.com 2009-03-11 17:55:24 --- yeah, I've noticed the same issue running at 1600x1024 windowed (yes, it's not *quite* 16:10, but it's in the same list). Running winedbg on the minidumps shows an empty backtrace.

--- Comment #18 from Justin slackbassist@gmail.com 2009-03-18 00:18:08 --- Confirmed this bug, on a nVidia 9600GT running 1680x1050, although on my system, anything above 1024x768 results in instability, and an eventual crash. I am not sure if it is the same bug, though. Is there any way to get some info through debugging in the command line? right now, I'm running with WINEDEBUG="fixme-all" and getting nothing that could be a hint. Any ideas?
Also, a similar crash would happen with fallout 3, in which the sound would loop, the video would freeze, and there would be an eventual crash to desktop. Is there any evidence to suggest that these two bugs could be related, or am I being too vague to even consider drawing that conclusion? -Justin

Sorry, also with wine 1.1.6 + Direct3D patch.

--- Comment #20 from Justin slackbassist@gmail.com 2009-06-01 01:59:11 --- Setting hl2.exe to use Win98 mode seems to be a workaround. I am able to play to my heart's content in Win98 mode.
