Bug ID: 35998 Summary: American Conquest: Divided Nation refuses to start. (Black Screen followed by crash). Product: Wine Version: 1.7.16 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: mjkolar@charter.net
I'm trying to play American Conquest: Divided Nations, but when I load it up, I get a flash of black screen followed by a CTD. The console output is as follows:
bash-4.2$ wine DMCR.exe err:winediag:xrandr12_init_modes Broken NVIDIA RandR detected, falling back to RandR 1.0. Please consider using the Nouveau driver instead. fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x33f5f8,0x00000000), stub! fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x33f828,0x00000000), stub! fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),1,0x33f828,0x00000000), stub! fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x33f6a8,0x00000000), stub! err:winediag:xrandr12_init_modes Broken NVIDIA RandR detected, falling back to RandR 1.0. Please consider using the Nouveau driver instead. err:mmio:MMIO_ParseExtA No extension in szFileName: "Sound\new\dr+flute2.wav" fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x33f458,0x00000000), stub! fixme:d3d_surface:d3dfmt_p8_init_palette No palette set.
Note that I installed this game according to the instructions listed on the following appdb page: https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=24902 , including the winecfg changes, the external patch, deleting the video directory, and setting ddraw to native for this app.
I have also installed the original American Conquest demo, and I can confirm it works with wine 1.7.12, but not wine 1.7.16, so I am presuming there is a regression between these two releases. The American Conquest: Divided Nation full version does not run with either release, and shows the same error messages for both wine releases. Note also I have used a nocd to get around Divided Nations Starforce (III?) protection. The demo does not have said protection, so not relevant in that case.
System: Slackware 14.1 x86_64 with alien multilib pack. Xorg 1.15.0 NVIDIA Proprietary Blob 334.21 /w Geforce GTX 285m Pulseaudio 5.0 Wine 1.7.12

--- Comment #1 from Jarkko K jarkko_korpi@hotmail.com --- I don't have the full game, but I tried the demo. It went 1st blank screen, then pink. It was unplayable for me. Using ati 7870, closed source driver. But when I quit the demo I could see few game pictures drawn correctly.

--- Comment #2 from Jarkko K jarkko_korpi@hotmail.com --- Forgot to say that wine version I tried quickly was 1.7.16.

--- Comment #3 from Jarkko K jarkko_korpi@hotmail.com --- I did multiple regression tests between 1.7.16 and 1.7.12, couldnt get it work. Always complaining no palette set.

3592 /* Old games like StarCraft, C&C, Red Alert and others use P8 render targets. 3593 * Reading back the RGB output each lockrect (each frame as they lock the whole screen) 3594 * is slow. Further RGB->P8 conversion is not possible because palettes can have 3595 * duplicate entries. Store the color key in the unused alpha component to speed the 3596 * download up and to make conversion unneeded. */

--- Comment #5 from Gery bugzilla@cablelink.at --- Works for me with Wine 1.7.22. I initially had the same problems, but I now created a new 32bit wineprefix just for Cossacks I and American Conquest - Fight Back and Divided Nations. I used these tricks to get it working: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=10427
I also didn't install the games directly into the wineprefix, I just copied the installed gamefiles from another wineprefix.

--- Comment #6 from Austin English austinenglish@gmail.com --- This is your friendly reminder that there has been no bug activity for over a year. Is this still an issue in current (1.7.51 or newer) wine?

Still a bug in wine with the demo http://www.gamershell.com/download_134.shtml
Still valid wine 1.9.7 and staging 1.9.7 (no crash, but black screen with both wines)
This could be a dupe bug 13198 . But I cant say for sure.

--- Comment #11 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr --- This is a duplicate of Bug 11782 . The workaround (modified ddraw.dll) does not work for both games with current wine but works for both with wine-1.3.26. The games were created by the same developper.
Can an administrator close this bug as DUPLICATE?
