Bug ID: 40730 Summary: Elasto Mania: Hang on launch - later works but without sound Product: Wine Version: 1.5.18 Hardware: x86 URL: http://elastomania.com/share_win.html OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@winehq.org Reporter: fritz-stuhr@web.de Regression SHA1: 841214ddb4d4dc620e6b51dfe6655b585d423edc Distribution: Ubuntu
Starting with 841214ddb4d4dc620e6b51dfe6655b585d423edc Elasto Mania (full version aswell as linked shareware version) hangs directly at the title screen or about a quarter of a second after starting the first level.
Beginning with 4f32f8e185949f2cb7bcee4f218f4724d5b823d5 it doesn't hang anymore but sound is not working anymore (was working fine before 841214ddb4d4dc620e6b51dfe6655b585d423edc).
Please note that the sound starts a bit delayed (I think that also happens on Windows). After starting the first level it takes about 3.5 seconds before you can hear anything.
Git bisecting was done on a Lubuntu 16.04 32bit live CD.

--- Comment #1 from Andrew Eikum aeikum@codeweavers.com --- The game seems to work for me, with sound. Can you attach a debug log with the channels from https://wiki.winehq.org/Sound?

--- Comment #2 from Andrew Eikum aeikum@codeweavers.com --- Please use the latest Wine release you can. The latest version is 1.9.12.

--- Comment #4 from Fritz Meier fritz-stuhr@web.de --- First of all: Thanks for looking into it. I attached the requested logfile. I used the instructions from https://wiki.winehq.org/Ubuntu to install 1.9.12.
I'm running a Lubuntu 16.04 32bit live USB stick. There are ~50 games on there using wine and in general the sound is working fine.
Lubuntu does not have PulseAudio installed but ALSA works fine.
I'm currently using wine 1.3.37 for Elasto Mania. With that everything works (see bisect in original description).
"lspci | grep Audio" shows "00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 6 Series/C200 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)". This is an HP laptop but I had the same problem on a Dell laptop (didn't test any others yet).
In case it helps: Wine staging 1.9.11 does not have sound either. Didn't test with 1.9.12 staging.

--- Comment #5 from super_man@post.com --- Works with wine-staging 1.9.13. No hang. I don't have the full game.

--- Comment #6 from Fritz Meier fritz-stuhr@web.de --- OK, made a few more tests. Each time installing 1.9.13 using http://pastebin.com/eziaq8cm on a freshly booted live USB system.
Ubuntu MATE 16.04 32bit and Linux Mint 17.3 64bit work out of the box.
Lubuntu 16.04 32bit has no sound.
But, installing pulseaudio fixes it immediately.
Another test showed that just setting "Output device" under winecfg -> Audio -> Defaults (without having pulseaudio installed) to the correct output makes sound work perfectly. Even the 3.5s delay I see with 1.3.37 is gone.
BUT, I have 40-50 games that work just fine without setting the "Output device" away from the system default. And with wine 1.3.37 (see bisect) Elasto Mania does not need that either.
It still looks like a wine bug to me. I can probably put a workaround into place now so I don't need 1.3.37 anymore but since this project is a portable gaming stick booting on different systems, I can't just set the output device to one value and be done with it.
If it helps I can attach logs with and without the output device set but I'm waging you can reproduce the problem with a Lubuntu live CD because I see the same on different laptops.

--- Comment #7 from Fritz Meier fritz-stuhr@web.de --- I have the same symptoms with the game Ignition.
And please note that "aplay -l" shows the exact card I select in winecfg to make it work as the default:
default:CARD=Intel HDA Intel, 92HD71B7X Analog Default Audio Device sysdefault:CARD=Intel HDA Intel, 92HD71B7X Analog Default Audio Device

--- Comment #8 from winetest@luukku.com --- I don't see any mentioned delay.
The commit reverts, but even it reverted I don't get any sound.
I just noticed if I start elma it somehow overrides my system audio configuration to something that doesn't output any audio.
I need to set 5.1 to audio configuration (kde). But after starting elma it has set it to streo mode...
this is not wine audio configuration. I have it all default and it works like that when kde is configurated correctly.
wine 2.0rc6.

And good news, the bug is fixed in wine-8.6. No hang. And cherry on the cake, sound works too.
Can an administrator close the bug as FIXED?
