Summary: Steam will not start Product: Wine Version: 0.9.43. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: test AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: andrew@webspot.co.uk
Created an attachment (id=7784) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=7784) App Output
After coming back to launch steam in the first time for a week, I found there's been a steam update. Once the update had installed, launching Steam, or even just trying to launch a steam game, results in wine crashing.
Attached is the Terminal output.

--- Comment #2 from Jeremy Parker jengaa@gmail.com 2007-09-14 19:48:16 --- I believe I have the same problem. Steam seems to run just fine, but when I try to launch a game the game will just crash. My wine version is 0.9.44. I have attached the console output.

--- Comment #3 from Philip J. Fry dabljuh@dabserver.dyndns.org 2007-09-23 16:13:18 --- I have experienced the same error beginning with wine 0.9.44
I did regression testing per http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting
This is the output of the last bisect, the patch that causes steam to crash with a structuredexception:

--- Comment #4 from Stefan Dösinger stefandoesinger@gmx.at 2007-09-23 17:40:22 --- I somewhat doubt that a header change could cause a problem when running wine, once wine is recompiled properly. Can you try the following steps? (try 2 if 1 doesn't help, etc)
1) Delete ClientRegistry.blob(a usual steam troubleshooting step) 2) Do a "make distclean" in your wine source directory and recompile from scratch 3) run wineprefixcreate to update the registry 4) delete ~/.wine to start with a fresh fake C drive and reinstall steam

--- Comment #5 from Philip J. Fry dabljuh@dabserver.dyndns.org 2007-09-23 17:52:33 --- (In reply to comment #3)
After more work and some assistance by #winehackers, I would like people who experience this problem (Steam fails to start with a structuredexception, since 0.9.43) to simply delete the Clientregistry.blob

--- Comment #6 from Stefan Dösinger stefandoesinger@gmx.at 2007-09-23 18:02:32 --- I'm tempted to close this as INVALID, Steam often messes up ClientRegistry.blob. But why does this (Steam) bug appear and disappear with a change in Wine?

--- Comment #7 from Joan Coll Cerdán johan_az@hotmail.com 2007-12-14 14:17:23 --- I can confirm that deleting the ClientRegistry.blob from the Steam folder and letting it to update again, solved the problem.
I wouldn't say that this is an invalid bug, since it doesn't happen in a real Windows environment (as far as I know).

--- Comment #8 from Stefan Dösinger stefandoesinger@gmx.at 2007-12-14 14:31:24 --- If you search the steam forums, you'll see a lot of complaints that steam doesn't run which are fixed with deleting ClientRegistry.blob

--- Comment #9 from Nico R. Wohlgemuth nico@lifeisabug.com 2007-12-19 09:58:31 --- I can confirm this problem with wine 0.9.51, deleting ClientRegistry.blob does NOT help. I managed to start steam after a desh installation but then I tried to play CS 1.6 and I got a traceback of the hl.exe, I closed steam and startet it but it won't show up. After "dir: C:\Program Files\Steam\bin\ *.flt" nothing happens, but the process is running, it self-exits after a long while.

I upgraded to git wine and steam seems to work, however the games are not - see attachment.

--- Comment #14 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-12-19 15:03:21 --- Invalid/fixed. Two problems in the same bug. Steam starts fine after removing ClientRegistry.blob because it gets corrupt by Steam itself.
The reason Steam doesn't "work" for you because it's already running - check system tray / process list.
Games don't start - it's a different bug
