Summary: Regression - Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 Standard freezes when setting volume Product: Wine Version: 1.1.19 Platform: PC URL: http://nuance.com OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: ole32 AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: susancragin@earthlink.net CC: huw@codeweavers.com
Created an attachment (id=20591) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=20591) Screenshot of the New User Wizard after the freeze
DNS10S installed and trained correctly until 4/17 or 4/20. Then something went wrong with the New User Wizard. When you click on DNS10S for the first time, you get the New User Wizard, two screens that test microphone loudness and then sensitivity. Until recently it worked well. Now loudness works most of the time, but sensitivity always freezes up the program. One thing I have noticed. There is a toggle button called Start/Stop Quality Check. Right before the program freezes, the button changes from start to stop all by itself, with no user input. I have included a screenshot.

I find that hard to believe. The patch is pretty trivial. I'm also surprised the app is doing clipboard stuff at this point. Could you check that again please (maybe get a working config just before this patch and then apply the patch to check it breaks)?

I did test your patch and it does not appear to be the problem. Then I did another regression test, using an earlier set of parameters. The test failed. All reported "bad" even though I started the test before the commits that caused it. So I have compiled a seh+ relay log and an ole log. I'm not sure what else I can do. Maybe I'll try another, bigger regression test in the next few days, when I have more time.

--- Comment #4 from Reece Dunn msclrhd@gmail.com 2009-04-21 15:27:06 --- Susan, did you do any other updates around the same time? You mentioned in your email that you are using a test build of alsa -- did you update that as well?
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18133
--- Comment #5 from Susan Cragin susancragin@earthlink.net 2009-04-21 16:36:14 --- Yes, I did. I compiled alsa-drivers with Tashaki Iwai's latest stable version, which has a driver that runs well with my Creative X-fi soundcard. (I don't use a whole test-build, just the driver portion.) If you think it worthwhile, I will purge them and recompile wine with the current generic drivers.

--- Comment #6 from Reece Dunn msclrhd@gmail.com 2009-04-22 00:11:31 --- That would be useful. I'd like to rule out the alsa change.
If it does turn out to be the alsa change, could you replace the entire alsa component with the latest version that you are using now. If that is still a problem, we will need to coordinate with alsa to see what has changed and why that is causing issues, which may require changes in Wine's alsa plugin.
Thanks, - Reece

--- Comment #7 from Susan Cragin susancragin@earthlink.net 2009-04-22 08:50:46 --- I tried re-installing the base alsa. This did not solve the problem. Then I tried using the USB sound. No luck.
Then this morning I downloaded the latest Ubuntu daily build, and re-installed. With a totally clean install, I did the following: purged pulseaudio rebooted compiled wine installed DNS
I did not attempt to install any experimental sound at all.
The sound does not work at all, for either my on-board intel-hda card or my USB card.
Then I tried to record using Audacity. NOTHING AT ALL. Conclusion -- Ubuntu no longer works without pulseaudio.
I have other news, too. When I tried to install the open-source java runtime environment, it wouldn't let me do so without pulseaudio. So I didn't install it, but this shows how insidious pulsaudio is getting.

--- Comment #8 from Susan Cragin susancragin@earthlink.net 2009-04-22 10:42:21 --- So, I reinstalled pulseaudio. My USB soundcard started working for all applications including DNS (with pasuspender), including setup and training. Hooray. My hda-intel card was recognized properly, but had no sound in any application.
So then I figured, what the heck. I compiled and installed the new alsa-drivers. There is basically no change. My Creative Audio X-fi card is properly recognized, as is my hda-intel card. Neither has any sound in any application. My USB still works (and works a bit better because of the new drivers).
So the problem is with pulseaudio. No longer can one purge it. And upon fresh install it has some improper mute settings.
This bug can probably be closed out?

--- Comment #9 from Susan Cragin susancragin@earthlink.net 2009-04-25 08:11:16 --- This bug cannot be closed out. USB soundcard (the only one I was able to make work after fooling around with pulseaudio etc.) did get through the training but crashed after a very short time. It does appear to be either a new method of alsa or kernel interacting with wine. I managed to get sound out of all my cards, and here's how I did it. I re-installed the system again, and this time upgraded to the experimental version of the kernel, which I was assured would correct the current sound problems with my other two (non-USB) cards. I then upgraded to the most current alsa-libs and alsa-drivers. Now sound works everywhere using Audacity without pulseaudio (even on my experimental X-fi driver), but wine still freezes.

--- Comment #10 from Susan Cragin susancragin@earthlink.net 2009-05-27 13:08:15 --- Update... I am now on Karmic Koala. Sound recognition still requires tweaks and only works correctly with a USB device.
Pulseaudio still does not seem to work with wine.
So I do the following: sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio sudo apt-get install esound
Then I install alsa-utils from Intrepid, because my favorite commands have been removed from Karmic.
asoundconf list asoundconf set-default-card Generic
I set winecfg to alsa.
My card is recognized correctly by the program, but when the program tries to set the volume control it freezes. (Time seems to be the factor, not the volume control operation itself.)
So I get out of Dragon. I change winecfg settings to use OSS only.
Program works, although not very well. Accuracy score lower than expected. Program works better using USB audio.
