Summary: 3D Studio MAX 7.0 cannot render 3D windows in program Product: Wine Version: 0.9.59. Platform: PC URL: http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112 &id=5659302 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: rockinup1231@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=12376) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=12376) Output from terminal (I broke it down to show what I saw, when I saw it happen).
After using ProcessExplorer to figure out what it used, I used a few DLL overrides and got the program to load it's window. After that, it locks up and simply can't load the 3D panels in the program for some reason. I've tried all I know so I figure it would be a good idea to tell about the bug on here (I also submitted my test data recently, and at this current moment is yet to be accepted).
My WINE version is 0.9.59
This is the list of DLL overrides I had to use. You will likely have to tweak them to try getting DirectX rendering to work.
avifil32 (native) comctl32 (native) comdlg32 (native) dcap32 (native) dciman32 (native) ddrawex (native) imagehlp (native) kernel32 (native) lz32 (native) msacm32 (native) msvfw32 (native) msxml3 (native) ole32 (native) oleacc (native) oleaut32 (native) oledlg (native) opengl32 (native, built-in) regapi (native) riched20 (native) riched32 (native) shdocvw (native) shell32 (native) shfolder (native) shlwapi (native)
You can remove the opengl32 override from the list if you want to try DirectX rendering. I also observed that unlike trying it in OpenGL mode, the only time that the window loads properly under DirectX rendering mode is after first selecting that mode, but trying to run the program again, it renders garbage for the window.
There may be some dll's in there that are unecessary, but I grabbed the ones that processexplorer said 3D Studio MAX was using during the time, and a few that I thought might also be necessary for the DLL's listed to work properly. Also, Software rendering failed, too. :(

I said that in the text file I attached. I mean't built-in, not native.

The site offers a 30 day free trial..Have you tested that?
Also, try without native dlls. If they must be used, file bugs (check for dupes first) for the reason you're using them.

I already have the program, I mentioned that for people who didn't.
As you'll notice without the native DLL's, the program will try loading the plugins, then lock up on the cmbtex.dlt plugin file, resulting in that final error.
I'll try running ProcessExplorer again to see if it can tell me what's happening during that moment.

The demo doesn't always have the same problem. It is useful for you to test it to see if it has the same problem so other's don't have to spend time to check for bugs that may not exist there.

That's fine, but you should file bugs for those. For all we know, with that many native DLLs, the bug you're currently filing may be because of those DLLs mixed with some wine DLLs...

--- Comment #8 from Justin Soulia rockinup1231@gmail.com 2008-04-22 14:55:22 --- Okay, I understand that. I'll see about testing the demo first if I can still get it off their site.
Also, I removed the plugin file that the program locks up on when it starts each time, and it initiated regardless. The program works without it, but all the objects are rendered without light effects or texture effects, which is what I think that cmbtex.dlt does (it's....I think...the combustion engine plugin). It worked without native DLL's, however.
I'll refrain from commenting on this until I've accomplished what need be first.

--- Comment #9 from Justin Soulia rockinup1231@gmail.com 2008-09-23 19:49:04 --- I know it's been a very long time since I last mentioned anything on the status of this bug. Unfortunately I didn't have access to my machine all summer, but I finally got to test it again.
3DS Max 7 under Wine-1.1.5 will load properly with the new instructions I placed in the app's HOWTO. It still involves moving the Combustion plugin files out of the stdplugs folder, but it doesn't seem to actually have any part in the dynamic lighting or coloring of geometry.
Under Software Rendering everything I tested and toyed with seemed to work fine, but I also tried toying with 3D Hardware rendering using DirectX. Both 9.0 and 8.1 modes work, but 9.0 mode renders all the objects in the Perspective viewport as black. Under 8.1 however, objects render and are colored properly. However, if you try to toy with any of the tools that adjust your point of view in the Perspective viewport, the program crashes. I found that following one of the several tutorials around the internet to install the native DirectX 9.0c solved this problem.
My machine doesn't have a DX9 compatible video card (an old nVidia GeForce 4000 MX), and uses the legacy accelerated video card drivers. Can someone try running the program with the HOWTO instructions for the app, that actually has a computer running a DX9 compatible card with the newer drivers? This would help make sure that the lockups with Wine's built-in DirectX aren't tied into my legacy video card drivers.

--- Comment #12 from Justin Soulia rockinup1231@gmail.com 2008-10-27 16:42:54 --- Wine-1.1.7, viewport windows load correctly and geometry renders properly under DirectX 8.1 mode without crashing. Still, geometry appears as black shapes in DirectX 9.0 mode.
Anyone have any better luck in DX9 mode?

--- Comment #14 from Justin Soulia rockinup1231@gmail.com 2009-10-04 22:29:12 --- As of Wine 1.1.30, geometry renders properly in all viewports and correctly colored/shaded in DirectX 8.1 and OpenGL modes. Shapes are still rendered completely black in DirectX 9 mode, however.
This is using the latest NVIDIA graphics drivers with my laptop, which has a GeForce 6100 Go chipset; enough to utilize DX9.
