Summary: Rome Total War v1.5: Crashes everytime when entering a battle. Product: Wine Version: 1.0-rc2 Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: rbasso1979@gmail.com CC: jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr, pastund@gmx.de
Created an attachment (id=13419) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=13419) Redirected Output (stdout & stderr)
The game crashes everytime it tries to load a battle, and gives the following error:
Generic Error: Insufficient video memory to load requested texture set.
The progress bar freezes near the end for almost a minute before the crash.
May be related to BUG 13118, because some posts report the same problem, but I didn't experienced any off the other problems listed there, so I think this is a different bug.

--- Comment #4 from rbasso1979@gmail.com 2008-05-29 00:34:24 --- I didn't tested the Demo version. Anyway, now there is a test result with Silver rating for Rome Total War submitted by Jordan using the same version (wine 1.0-rc2).

I have no idea about how he did that. Maybe the bug doesn't affects everybody, or I am doing something really wrong here. :-)
I will post a question there about this right now.

Same problem with the demo version?
Rome Total War Demo: Yes, enable "Shadows". "High Quality Shadows" is working fine.
Rome Total War Gold v1.5: enabled "battlefield shadows" (translated) causes crash. "detail unites shadows" is working fine, but is disabled as long "battlefield shadows" is disabled.
I tested Rome Total War Gold v1.5 with highest available settings except disabled "battlefield shadows" (translated). I was able to play on battlefield with more than 5000 unites with my GF6800 128MB graphic card.
RomeTW only crashs on battlefield, if I hover my mouse over buttons which modify this with shadowed button or lighter button. This is not reproducible with RomeTW Demo.
RomeTW Gold v1.5 mouse controls on battlefield also not completely working (fullscreen tested). If mouse touch left side of the screen, camera is rotating. This is working fine in RomeTW Demo version. But if mouse tough right side of the screen, camera is only rotating in RomeTW Demo.

Rome Total War Gold v1.5: enabled "battlefield shadows" (translated) causes crash. "detail unites shadows" is working fine, but is disabled as long "battlefield shadows" is disabled.
Confirmed. Loading battles no longer crashes when the shadows are off and the game sort of works (although slowly and crashing a lot).
RomeTW only crashs on battlefield, if I hover my mouse over buttons which modify this with shadowed button or lighter button. This is not reproducible with RomeTW Demo.
Confirmed this one too. During battle, buttons that highlight on mouse hover cause the game to crash with a page fault. Also, pressing F1 to bring key help crashes the game (also in campaign map). The error looks like this: wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x0372e87d at address 0xc4deed (thread 0009), starting debugger... Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x0372e87d in 32-bit code (0x00c4deed).

If I move mouse cursor over those buttons my Rome Total War Gold v1.5 / WINE crashs with (last three lines): fixme:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_EvictManagedResources (0x404ed70) : stub fixme:d3d_draw:drawPrimitive Using software emulation because not all material properties could be tracked err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0xc4deed

--- Comment #10 from Daniel pastund@gmx.de 2008-08-24 08:48:32 --- I tried a regression testing and I have tracked the bug "crash if highlight on mouse hover" between good release Wine-0.9.59 and bad release Wine-0.9.60. I can only compile each version alone, because I cannot solve my problem with regression test: "Bisecting: 277 revisions left to test after this fatal: Untracked working tree file 'dlls/quartz/fourcc.h' would be overwritten by merge."

I solved this problem. I deleted Wine-git and downloaded again. After that procedure the regression testing was successful.

--- Comment #13 from Stephen Mills smills15@cox.net 2008-09-10 21:14:38 --- I have been trying to track down this bug and have the source narrowed down to a group of 47 patches between 0.9.57 and 0.9.58, but any more bisects past this point leaves the game complaining that I need to reinstall directX. I was actually able to find the patch where it began to fail this way unfortunately I don't know what to do about it. Hopefully someone more skilled with git can point me in the right direction.
Even without fully completing this test there are a couple of patches that look very suspicious. Both of the following patches specifically deal with adding functions to test the texturing capabilities of the graphics hardware

It doesn't crash any more with wine 1.1.30 even with graphic settings set to highest possible. In fact I've been playing whole campaign and many other battles without single crash. (Rome Total War Gold v1.5, ATI mobility Radeon X1600)
