Summary: Movie Magic Screenwriter 6: Initialization Error requiring installation of a device driver Product: Wine Version: 0.9.56. Platform: PC OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: silverscreenwriter@gmail.com
Created an attachment (id=11744) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=11744) Command line error output
I'm running Fedora Core 8. Kernel is 2.6.24.3-50.
I used Add/Remove Software to install Wine 0.9.56.
I then installed, without issue, Movie Magic Screenwriter 6.0. The program's start-up icon was copied to my desktop.
When I click on the icon, I get the following message:
Initialization Error: "This software requires installation of device driver TPkd and a reboot before running. Please reboot or reinstall the software."
The above-mentioned driver is installed at ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/drivers/TPkd.sys
A reinstall and/or reboot has no affect.
When I run it from the command line, there is error output, which I have attached as a plain text file named "WineError.txt". The first line of the file displays the command entered to start the program.
If you should need any additional information, please contact me via e-mail.

--- Comment #3 from Anastasius Focht focht@gmx.net 2008-04-02 16:25:06 --- Hello,
--- quote --- Does anyone know if these drivers work in Wine? --- quote ---
I'm tempted to say "forget it". That driver belongs to PACE Interlok software protection. Very intrusive at kernel level (ring0).
From difficulty level it belongs to StarForce "category" - if not worse.
Lots of stuff it uses go beyond the scope of wine, e.g. hooking of IDT, SSDT, peeking at kernel level structures (EPROCESS/KTHREAD/...). More worse it patches ntoskrnl at various places (relying on certain windows kernel layouts = highly version specific) ... such stuff makes even native windows shudder ;-)
At least the demo can be used without the driver - after applying 'sh winetricks msxml3' (wine msxml insufficiency).

I tested it in 1.0-rc3. The demo still installs fine and gives an error at startup, but the error message from the program itself now says OLE error, and the console output is different from what the original reporter posted. Using native msxml3 solves the problem. (TPkd.sys still doesn't load, and the demo still doesn't seem to care.)

My original post did NOT contain output from the demo version of the program. The output was generated using the fully registered version of Movie Magic Screenwriter.
I'm not interested in getting the demo version of Movie Magic Screenwriter to work; it's the fully registered version that I want to use.

That's perfectly fine, but few people here have the full version. Fixing bugs in the demo will most likely fix the same bugs in the full version. By testing and reporting bugs in that version, we can all be on the same page.

Tested in 1.1.10. The demo still needs native msxml3 to start. Instead of tpkd.sys simply failing to load there is now a crash, though the demo itself starts up and runs fine afterward. (I assume the full version won't, since according to the original reporter the app requires tpkd.sys to be loaded.) Attaching console output.

--- Comment #9 from foobard jens@porup.com 2009-03-06 11:11:11 --- I downloaded the trial version and tested it in wine 1.1.16.
The program downloads and installation begins automatically. Nice.
Installation progresses, and after selecting "Don't Activate Now" I get a message box saying an error occurred: "OLE error 80004001".
There seems to be an unimplemented funtion "ntoskrnl.exe.KeInitializeMutex"
see attached error log.

--- Comment #10 from Rosanne DiMesio dimesio@earthlink.net 2009-07-27 10:18:15 --- The demo still needs native msxml3 to run in 1.1.26, however, tpkd.sys no longer crashes and there are no longer any console messages about being unable to load it at startup. Someone with the full version needs to test it in current Wine to see what happens with this driver, as the demo was always able to run without it. The msxml3 issue is really a separate bug.

--- Comment #11 from Juan Lang juan_lang@yahoo.com 2009-11-10 21:07:09 --- No response? The demo installs and runs here. It pops up a dialog about some OLE error or other, but continues to run. Installing msxml3 gets around the error. I'm closing this fixed, as the original crash due to missing KeInitializeMutex has been fixed for some time. Feel free to open another bug about the msxml3 problem, or reopen if the full version still isn't working for you.

Also refining summary to mention the actual problem (missing stub to prevent driver from crashing). There are a couple of dupes because things were buried in comments.
