Summary: Lego Star Wars: unable to switch resolution Product: Wine Version: 1.1.29 Platform: PC OS/Version: Mac OS X 10.5 Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: directx-d3d AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: hoehle@users.sourceforge.net
Created an attachment (id=23591) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=23591) excerpt of console messages about GL errors and crash
When started in a 1024x768 desktop window, the app starts fine. However, any attempt to switch to a lower or higher resolution crashes after displaying a hundred GL errors (see attachment).
It seems Robin Marlow mentioned similar (if not opposite) behaviour on Linux in his App DB test results of 2008-12-30: "Was not happy unless run in a window - then could alter resolution without crashes." http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=12828&i...
Using OSX 10.5.7 with XQuartz 2.3.3.2 on NVidia 9400M.

--- Comment #1 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2009-09-14 08:30:14 --- Created an attachment (id=23595) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=23595) trace snippet with debugstr about D3D error and MessageBox call
This snippet belong to a trace where the app would not start at all in wine-1.1.29. It does not even manage to display the known MessageBox "failed to find suitable refresh rate for current resolution".
The cause was the file SWLEGO.bin which stores the user's configuration settings. Enabling + Bump Mapping on + Plastic Reflections On in the Effect Options menu during game play causes a crash upon startup the next time the game is started. Changing these settings works fine during game (the effect is immediately visible). Remove the file and it starts again.

--- Comment #2 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2009-09-17 11:36:09 --- Starting with wine explorer=LegoStarWars,1280x1024 LegoStarwars.exe or other resolutions listed in the app's menu works fine. The crash is only when trying to switch resolutions (or when a SWLEGO.bin file is present at start).

--- Comment #3 from joaopa jeremielapuree@yahoo.fr 2011-06-25 09:09:05 CDT --- Is it still a bug in current wine?
If yes, does it occur with the demo http://www.jeuxvideo.com/telecharger/jeux-et-demos/00009640-lego-star-wars-l...

--- Comment #4 from Jörg Höhle hoehle@users.sourceforge.net 2012-02-24 16:29:30 CST --- The good news with 1.4-rc5 in Mac OS X 10.5.8: + It does not crash anymore when changing resolution. + The SWLEGO.bin does not disturb. Previous settings are loaded and shown in the graphics effects menu.
However, - Switching to a lower resolution does not resize the virtual desktop window. An unused area remains at the bottom right with whatever graphics were displayed last. - Switching to a higher resolution than initially started does not resize either. Try and go from 800x600 to 1280x1024 and you'll not be able to read the centered menu texts.
In summary, it's still better to start without SWLEGO.bin using: wine explorer /desktop=LegoStarWars,1280x1024 LegoStarWars.exe to force a good enough initial resolution.
I always use a virtual desktop on the Mac. In the past, XQuartz did not support xrandr. Nowadays, I don't want to switch resolutions, muck with ctrl-alt-A or have a game screen without normal windows. I got used to many windows on a desktop, e.g. 1280x1024 or 1440x1200 windows within a 1600x1200 screen are perfectly usable and you get instant switching to other apps.
