Summary: cube hangs on startup attempting to play music / SDL_mixer 1.2.6 Product: Wine Version: 0.9.54. Platform: All URL: http://downloads.sourceforge.net/cube/cube_2005_08_29_wi n32.exe?modtime=1125359443&big_mirror=0 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: directx-dsound AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: jeffzaroyko@gmail.com
cube is a free (zlib licensed) portable first person shooter which runs on Windows, GNU/Linux and others, it uses SDL and SDL_mixer.
wine-0.9.54, Ubuntu 7.04 it hangs on startup
If I untick any selected sound devices in winecfg the program does not hang.
Looking at the output of WINEDEBUG=+dsound, it appears to loop endlessly as if it is playing audio samples but nothing is heard.
The version of SDL_mixer.dll distributed with cube is 1.2.6.0 - I tested substituting a later version and it does not hang.

Also, try in latest git, I just tried it there and it ran fine (had to run it from the parent directory though...) Not sure about sound, as I don't have speakers hooked up on this computer.

--- Comment #4 from Jeff Zaroyko jeffzaroyko@gmail.com 2008-02-16 20:17:24 --- Yes, it most certainly works in Windows, thousands of people have been using this exact version since 2005 without a problem. I don't think app isn't buggy, it appears to be a particular usage of dsound in SDL_mixer 1.2.6 which works on windows but doesn't work in wine 0.9.54.
Tested in latest git, yes it works here, doesn't work in 0.9.54 and prior, marking fixed.

--- Comment #6 from Jeff Zaroyko jeffzaroyko@gmail.com 2008-02-18 06:11:38 --- hmm, I'm reopening this because I've just tested it again with git and it hangs this time and as expected it still works by replacing the SDL_mixer.dll.
I've verified that no applications have any sound devices open using lsof.
Strange as it did work once just before when you mentioned it working in git.

Have you updated since then? Could be a regression...Not likely, but something to check for.

--- Comment #11 from Lauri Niskanen ape3000@gmail.com 2008-09-23 09:22:51 --- I think this exactly same bug is also blocking sounds with UnReal World. The game works when I disable the sounds, but otherwise it just stucks on the initialization. I couldn't get the game working by replacing the SDL_mixer.dll..

--- Comment #15 from James Huk Huk@wine.x.pl 2010-06-29 13:08:05 --- I don't see this error with wine-1.2-rc5.
I tested like this:
1.I downloaded the game and created new wineprefix 2.I installed the game 3.Started wine cmd 4.Started cube.bat from within wine cmd
The first standard map loaded without any problems, I could hear music, then I started a single player map - also with (other) music, and I could hear it as well - no crashes, nothing.
This bug was probably fixed.
Testes with:
Debian Lenny, kernel-2.6.34-custom
