Summary: wine crashes with unhandled page fault when running HeadOverHeels Product: Wine Version: 1.1.40 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: wickeduk@hotmail.co.uk
Created an attachment (id=26880) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=26880) contains crash log

--- Comment #2 from GyB gyebro69@gmail.com 2010-03-19 10:08:19 --- If I understand you correctly the game doesn't even start for you? I've tested it with Wine-1.1.40, installed into a clean wineprefix and it always starts up fine (fullscreen/virtual desktop mode) for me. However, there are occasionally crashes when starting a new game from the menu, like every third or fourth attempt. These crashes seem to be audio related, because after completely disabling sound in winecfg, no more crash occurs during gameplay.
Anyway, can you re-test the game by:
1. Install it into a clean Wine environment (no dll overrides are needed). 2. If crash still happens, try to disable sound in winecfg's Audio tab.
Fedora 12 Wine-1.1.40 from source Nvidia card with driver 195.36.08

--- Comment #3 from wickeduk@hotmail.co.uk 2010-03-20 13:10:33 --- Tried moving my .wine directory. Reinstalled the app into a clean .wine, still same problem. Turned off sound, still same problem.

--- Comment #4 from wickeduk@hotmail.co.uk 2010-03-20 13:14:54 --- Note I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2's version of 1.1.41 - wonder if that is why there is a difference?

--- Comment #5 from GyB gyebro69@gmail.com 2010-03-20 13:39:30 --- Still no crash on starting up, using Wine-1.1.41. The game uses 640x480 screen resolution in 16-bit depth, is that resolution available for you in your xorg.conf? What gfx card and drivers are you using?
If the game ran well for you with an earlier version of Wine, please do a regression test: http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting

--- Comment #6 from wickeduk@hotmail.co.uk 2010-05-17 05:48:47 --- Haven't had a chance to try and compile source in some kind of binary search fashion (any way to get hold of suse rpms for older versions of wine?) to work out where it broke. It does work ok with 1.0.1 though (although it does crash sometimes on start). Noted that other retrospec games also are broken (manic miner and jet set willy), but work with 1.0.1 with no problems. This is probably as they are based on the same dll.
My gfx card is a Nvidia (offhand don't remember which version and not typing this from my machine) using the latest drivers from their site.

--- Comment #7 from wickeduk@hotmail.co.uk 2010-11-25 10:14:25 CST --- Same problem seen with a different machine:
This time the graphics chip is Intel HD (core i3 370M) running SuSE 11.3 built wine, so I would suspect that likely eliminates both NVidia and the graphics config.
The two main things in common are SuSE doing the build and running on 64bit processors. Given the problem is 'Unhandled page fault on read access', I'm suspecting it might be a problem with wine on 64bit processors.
Aside from doing the regression test which I still don't have time to do, a question is can anyone else run it on a 64bit processor (preferably using a SuSE build - 11.3 has a 64 bit build, 11.2 on my old machine was running 32 bit builds - both 64 bit processors though).

Works fine for me now in wine 1.5.16, assuming fixed.
