Bug #: 29572 Summary: Midtown Madness 2 speedometer slows game down Product: Wine Version: 1.3.36 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: magnedj@gmail.com Classification: Unclassified
I installed the game after using 'winetricks directmusic' as described in report #21249, and everything worked pretty well. But rendering is a little sluggish, so after doing some trial-and-error I found the cause to be the digital speedometer in lower left corner. You can toggle it on and off with H, and as such I found the game to run quite a bit smoother after toggling it off, and then slower again when toggling it on again.
I found that this affects both the full version of the game, and the trial available at http://download.microsoft.com/download/midtownmad2/Trial/1.0/W9X2K/EN-US/mm2... (You may need to use a virtual desktop in order to get the setup rendering correctly. However, the game runs well in fullscreen in my experience.)
In multiplayer games it's quite a nuisance having to turn off the speedometer to achieve acceptable rendering, so if someone could have a look at this and perhaps improve the situation, I and my friends would be very grateful.

--- Comment #1 from GyB gyebro69@gmail.com 2012-01-09 15:21:54 CST --- I can reproduce the problem on my system, using a Nvidia gfx card with the proprietary driver (290.10) Performance drops considerably when the HUD is turned on. This is more noticeable with screen resolutions >1024x768. The mouse pointer is also more sluggish in the menus than it was with Wine-1.3.28. The car selection screen also shows a slowdown compared to 1.3.28.
Performance was steady with 1.3.28 whether the HUD was turned on or off, and regression testing resulted in

ddraw: Use offscreen backbuffers.
In principle this allows us to use more than one backbuffer in ddraw. It's also a requirement for the next patch.
