Summary: dogfood: skype only works in "Win95" mode Product: Wine Version: 1.0-rc1 Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: NEW Severity: major Priority: P2 Component: kernel32 AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: marcus@jet.franken.de
The windows Skype in win XP mode crashes with trace:seh:raise_exception code=c0000005 flags=0 addr=0x593ad1 trace:seh:raise_exception info[0]=00000000 trace:seh:raise_exception info[1]=ffffffff trace:seh:raise_exception eax=000000ad ebx=000000ad ecx=000007c8 edx=0033fcd0 esi=00000000 edi=01ca0460 trace:seh:raise_exception ebp=00000000 esp=0033fcd0 cs=0023 ds=002b es=002b fs=0063 gs=006b flags=00210202 trace:seh:call_stack_handlers calling handler at 0x48bd29 code=c0000005 flags=0 wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0xffffffff at address 0xffb4a51e:0x00593ad1 (thread 0009), starting debugger...
and the instruction there is a int 0x2e, which is not handled.
When setting the Windows version to Win95, Skype.exe works wonderful (buyt displays other warnings).
=> Skype Should work in XP mode too.
=> Or we should set the default cversion for Skype.exe to Win95 in our registry

--- Comment #1 from Marcus Meissner marcus@jet.franken.de 2008-05-22 07:48:16 --- this was skype 3.5 which works afterwards.
skype 3.8 also crashes with int 0x2e in Win XP mode, which gets also fixed by setting Winver to Win95. However it later on crashes due to something else.

Installer seem to work under Wine with default settings. Takes long, at least 5 minutes to install. Installer then fails, offering alternative download. Winebrowser fails to download this file, see log below.
Unable to find working alternate download link for latest version.
Used link for older version (http://www.skype.com/go/getskype-accessibility) to download a full installer for Skype. This version pops up the GUI and crashes with the default Wine settings. It crashes sooner when Wine is set to Win95 mode.
(I do not have debugging symbols currently and no package seem to be available)
Skype fails to start in WinXP mode afterwards. Log attached above.

Wine version: 1.1.23
It would really be useful to use latest Wine version.

And attach _complete_ terminal output and not omitting the most interesting piece. If that's all you get, then your Wine is broken, compile it from source. It's been a known issue with Ubuntu binary packages for a long time.

can't reproduce the crash. Installs and starts fine in clean WINEPREFIX. Though I can't do further testing as I don't have a skype account.
Does this crash happen after login?
If it still crashes with current GIT (>1.3.37), please attach WINEDEBUG=+tid,+seh,+relay trace log (start notepad prior in other terminal).

--- Comment #20 from Rafal Stanilewicz washuu@eastnews.com.pl 2012-01-23 01:20:48 CST --- In my case, it is not a crash. When you run Skype, it asks for data of a new account - and when you start typing something in the right panel (account data), after 5 seconds the whole windows freezes, and clicking it again display window about unresponsive app, and you can only Force Quit.
The same installation runs OK, in windows 95, 98 or ME modes, and crashes or freezes in XP, 2000 or NT4.0 modes.
Clean wine 1.3.37.

Skype 3.5 still crashes in the same way in wine-1.6-rc5 and Win95 mode still works around the bug.
Now, let's concentrate on that as that is why this bug report was submitted and let's not assume that every crash in every version of Skype is the same.
