Summary: Mass Effect 2: No audio in menus/videos/game Product: Wine Version: unspecified Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: minor Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: [email protected] ReportedBy: [email protected]
Created an attachment (id=28791) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=28791) terminal output
The only place you can get sound is in the launcher. Everything else is silent.
I have OpenAL installed, and ~/.alsoftrc contains: austin@midna:~$ cat .alsoftrc drivers = alsa
I've tried disabling mmdevapi in winecfg, changing windows version to vista/7, using hardware emulation, using OSS instead of ALSA, etc., but have yet to get any sound out.
The AppDB suggests installing foobar2000, then: "Use foobar2000 to set the playback device and then select the Direct Analog version in MassEffect2Config.exe."
though in the configuration tool's audio tab, the sound devices list is empty, for me (with/without foobar2000).
Terminal output attached, though there's nothing obvious there.

Good point, but no, doesn't make any difference.

--- Comment #3 from Austin English [email protected] 2010-06-13 03:00:35 --- Actually, don't even get full sound in launcher. On windows, there's some background music, but not on wine. The only sound that works is a 'ding' when you click play. That sound seems to be a WAV file, because if I click 'Support' several times in a row, I get an error about WAV headers.

--- Comment #6 from Dan Kegel [email protected] 2010-06-13 09:05:05 --- I've heard that using the launcher causes there to be no sound in the game. Have you tried bypassing the launcher? That's how I run it in Linux, and might explain why I never had this particular sound problem.

Yeah, that makes a difference, but only if you're in a virtual desktop:
no VD, using launcher: no sound no VD, using masseffect2.exe: no sound VD, using launcher: no sound VD, using masseffect2.exe: sound
however, using the virtual desktop then gives you bug 23127, and makes controlling the mouse harder..

--- Comment #8 from Dan Kegel [email protected] 2010-06-13 13:03:13 --- How exactly does it make controlling the mouse harder - does the warp fix not work then?

How exactly does it make controlling the mouse harder - does the warp fix not work then?
Sorta. The mouse is no longer confined to the middle of the screen, but like you pointed out in bug 23135, if you move your mouse toward the edge of the screen, it can easily leave the virtual desktop. To make larger movements, you have to leave the desktop and come back around from the other side. It's technically playable, but trying to play the game like that is very difficult.
In full screen mode the mouse is fine, with the warp fix, but then you get no sound.

--- Comment #14 from Mikael Åkersund [email protected] 2012-03-22 14:14:37 CDT --- The only way for me to get any sound in-game is to use the Steam menu to start the launcher.
Starting MassEffect2.exe or MassEffectLauncher.exe manually (with or without Steam running) results in only getting sound during the Bioware & EA logo videos and no sound at all in the game.
Wine 1.5.0, and no VD.

--- Comment #19 from Béla Gyebrószki [email protected] --- Still present in Wine 1.7.42.
When starting the game from the launcher the Bioware and EA logos have sound, the menu has no sound, upon starting a new game the first intro video 'Previously on Mass Effect' has music but no voices, the rest of the game runs silently.
Audio works properly if I start the game directly with MassEffect2.exe
no VD, using launcher: no sound VD, using launcher: no sound VD, using masseffect2.exe: sound
The same here...
no VD, using masseffect2.exe: no sound
I do have sound in this case.

What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- CC| |[email protected]
--- Comment #20 from Lorenzo [email protected] --- I'm also getting no audio at all, but my issue seems to be slightly different, so apologies if this is not relevant.
More specifically, I also get no audio at all in the game on my Fedora 21 x86_64, Wine 1.7.44. It doesn't seem like a Wine or Steam issue, as if I watch a teaser video in the Steam app store it works: launching the game, whether I pass through the launcher or not, doesn't give me any audio, not even in the intro videos.
That said, no other game has working audio either, which makes me think it's a more generic issue (but why then the integrated check in winecfg and the teaser videos have audio instead?). I tried overriding dsound with the native library and that way I get audio instead, so I guess it's an issue with the builtin dsound in recent Wine versions. It's happening with games that had perfectly working audio up to a few weeks ago: not sure when this happened and what version of Wine caused this.

Origin is a different download, you're not necessarily testing the same thing. Aside from that, there's a download, it's not abandoned.

It's not platinum if you overrode dlls.

Try testing it again. It's been 5 years since we've heard from you. And how would any other executable be different?
It's not platinum if you overrode dlls.
OK, then I didn't override dll's. It doesn't matter it works regardless.

There was no request to test before you comment in recent years, that doesn't make a bug abandoned.
And how would any other executable be different?
By definition, different executables can have different behavior. It's common, e.g., for GOG versions of games to have different behavior than their original counterparts.
It's not platinum if you overrode dlls.

Updated.
Does the bug still occur with wine-9.0-rc5 in a fresh wine prefix?
Yes. In wine-9.0-rc5, if I start the launcher: * no background sound in launcher * clicking a button in launcher does work (as it did in comment #3). * there _is_ sound in intro videos * no sound in playable portions of the demo
If game is run directly, bypassing the launcher, sound works in game.
