Summary: Steam 2010 beta UI fails to draw Product: Wine Version: 1.1.39 Platform: x86 OS/Version: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: johnnyuk@hotmail.com
Created an attachment (id=26450) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=26450) console output up to point of successful connection (auto-login)
New steam February beta cannot draw UI to screen. Program does NOT crash or hang.
The two main recurring errors are * Corrupt JPEG data: 57 extraneous bytes before marker 0xdb * fixme:threadpool:RtlQueueWorkItem Flags 0x4 not supported
along with one error on startup: * fixme:win:RegisterDeviceNotificationA (hwnd=0x10110, filter=0x32dc00,flags=0x00000004) returns a fake device notification handle!
There ARE other minor errors relating to network code, but as the program connects to the steam network these don't seem particularly relevant at this time.
Also worth noting: the font on the notification applet steam icon menu (and presumably all steam menus) fails to draw. This can be fixed by changing basefontbold="Arial Bold" to "basefontbold=Arial Black" in /steam/resource/styles/steam.styles
Full log from execute to connected attached.

--- Comment #3 from edward savage epssyis@gmail.com 2010-02-24 12:17:03 --- While the main Steam window doesn't appear to draw, it is retrieving images from the internet. These can be found in $\Steam\config\htmlcache and appear to be the images from the front page of the Steam main window and the 'Steam News' window that usually pops up. Deleting these files and running Steam again will repopulate this folder.
I spent a couple of hours attempting to track down what was going wrong tonight and haven't found much, hopefully some one has better luck.

--- Comment #4 from amro saziel@gmail.com 2010-02-24 15:43:50 --- A note that might help tracking down the problem: On Windows, it only renders on the primary screen. They're using a new custom painter, I'm guessing whatever the cause behind it failing on multi monitor setups is also what's causing it to fail on wine.

--- Comment #5 from johnnyuk@hotmail.com johnnyuk@hotmail.com 2010-02-24 16:06:49 --- It should be noted for anyone trying to debug this that setting 'remember password' before running the update allows steam to at least log in. This displays the context menu in the notification area and shows the popup for new messages and contacts coming online. It's odd that those render while the UI doesnt...

--- Comment #6 from johnnyuk@hotmail.com johnnyuk@hotmail.com 2010-02-25 06:28:28 --- Found a temporary fix for anyone who's interested - simply marking steam.exe to start in Windows 7 compatibility mode allows it to render without a problem. Running here on karmic x86, wine 1.1.39, no problems so far.

--- Comment #9 from edward savage epssyis@gmail.com 2010-02-25 08:29:25 --- Setting steam.exe to Windows 7 allows me to use the new Steam UI and many existing and long standing bugs appear to be fixed. For example; the tab for accepting new friends in the communities section works and friends can be added, scrolling works on all pages, pages render smoothly and don't break current position if you attempt to scroll (get locked to the top of the page).
I am unable to run hl2.exe games via the Library window as the loading game box comes up but the game does not spawn. Running the games via applaunch continues to work (I have hl.exe set to Windows 98). The console output when a game fails to run, maybe unrelated, from the library section is: err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x1447034 "?" wait timed out in thread 001e, blocked by 001f, retrying (60 sec)
Attempting to buy games for self does not currently work and gives the URL path error in my attached image. "testshell-error:"
Every time Steam is started it attempts to install a service as shown in attached image.
With the Steam UI visible using version Windows 7 (via applaunch) Team Fortress 2 runs notably slower. When the UI is not visible TF2 runs comparably to windows native speeds. Once a solution is found to this issue it might be worth leaving the option to keep Steam invisible for better gaming in the short term.

Setting steam.exe to Windows 7 allows me to use the new Steam UI
Yes, this seems to work fine for me now.
I am unable to run hl2.exe games via the Library window as the loading game box comes up but the game does not spawn.
I don't see this: launching TF2 (with its hl2.exe set to W98 in winecfg) from the Games page of the UI seems to work just fine for me.

Me too, I've left hl2.exe unspecified, defaulting to WinXP. Seems to run fine (infact, it's been a while since I've tried it - it's running quite smoothly these days!)

I just tried with todays (2010-04-15) wine-git and this workaround is no longer necesserary.
The Steam Beta UI now displays fine in the default Windows XP mode. Using wine 1.1.40 is still broken so the bug fix is in Wine, not some unknown update to the steam client. Wine git from 2010-04-15 has the fix, possible earlier as well.
