Summary: counter strike 1.6 does not react when having activex control Product: Wine Version: 0.9.45. Platform: Other OS/Version: other Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: enhancement Priority: P2 Component: wine-misc AssignedTo: wine-bugs@winehq.org ReportedBy: martin@gamesplace.info
When I have the activex control installed (wine asks me if I want to do so), then I can not click the OK button in the MODT in CounterStrike 1.6. Pressing ESC also does not help.
I have an other Wine installation without the activex control, and the message does not appear either. There, it works like a charm.
This is the output I get:

--- Comment #1 from Martin Jürgens martin@gamesplace.info 2007-09-17 15:44:15 --- Created an attachment (id=8122) --> (http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=8122) WINEDEBUG=+shdocvw
This is a log of WINEDEBUG=+shdocvw.
I pressed ESC two times at the end. Actually, the game menu should have appeard, but instead the only thing was a waiting cursor for a short time.

--- Comment #2 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-09-19 00:03:00 --- What does exactly the message say that wants to install Wine_gecko? Are you sure you using the new Wine version and that you removed ~/.wine directory?
Please DO NOT PASTE LOGS!!! ATTACH THEM INSTEAD!!!
Also you starting the game wrong! You have to use "wine Steam -applaunch 10"
Where are you getting MOTD? What level? What server?
So far it seems like invalid bug to me.

--- Comment #3 from Martin Jürgens martin@gamesplace.info 2007-09-19 01:09:36 --- The message exactly says the following: "The application is trying to show an HTML page. Wine needs Gecko (Mozilla HTML Engine) to be installed to show the page. Click install if you want Wine to automatically download and install Gecko."
Before installing the game, I removed ~/.wine.
Sorry for pasting the log, I actually though that it was a much shorter cut :/
My version of the game creates a shortcut saying "hl.exe -nomaster -game cstrike". As starting it by this works fine on Windows, I though that I'd better start it up like this with Wine.
I am getting the MOTD, which is blank, after starting a local server. This happens to all maps.

--- Comment #4 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-09-19 07:28:38 --- I can not confirm it. When properly started (via steam) I can click "OK" button in MOTD. "hl.exe -nomaster -game cstrike" does not work for me. You sure you talking about 1.6 Counter-Strike? It's the Steam version of the game. The latest not steamed version was 1.1.1.0

--- Comment #5 from Martin Jürgens martin@gamesplace.info 2007-09-19 07:31:10 --- I am sure that it is Counter Strike 1.6. Though, it is a slightly modified version enabling users to play it without internet on LANs for example (so it is non-Steamed).

slightly modified version
Hacked/broken/modified software can have any number of problems not otherwise present in normal versions. Install proper version of the game. If it exhibits the same problem, reopen.

--- Comment #7 from Martin Jürgens martin@gamesplace.info 2007-09-19 12:54:48 --- Vitaly, as far as I understand, Wine's goal is to make it possible to run Windows applications on Unix. (http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/wine-faq/index#IF-WINE-COMPLETELY-REPLACES-M...)
I can't find any definition which programs are Windows applications and which are not. But I guess that even though my program is modified, it is still a Windows application which is covered by Wine's goal: To make it run on Unix.
As the application mentioned here does work fine with Windows and Cedega, isn't it worth investigating the problem in order to find out if it is a bug in Wine or in the application?
I think that we both know that Wine does have bugs (as every program) and that you can run into them even using modified software. I don't see why there should not be investigation into this problem.
I would like to reopen it because of this, but please tell me what you think about that.

--- Comment #8 from Vitaliy Margolen vitaliy@kievinfo.com 2007-09-19 21:41:06 ---
Install proper version of the game. If it exhibits the same problem, reopen.
That says it all. If you install _not modified_ version of CS, and if has exactly the same problem, then you can reopen this bug.
FIY Steam has off-line mode in which you still can connect to LAN hosted games.

--- Comment #9 from Martin Jürgens martin@gamesplace.info 2007-09-20 00:29:41 --- Nice argumentation. You do not seem to be interested in improving Wine's quality, in which it IMO does not matter what the application is.
