Partial functionality testing is possible without virt_cacard, by installing the vsmartcard-vpcd package you can get to the reader listing stage. At least tests for SCardListReaders and SCardGetStatusChange will work. \ vsmartcard-vpcd also allows you to "insert" a smartcard over the network, but I haven't used this functionality.
