Good to know that it works on macOS. I was going to add that it also works on Windows without admin permissions. So the expected behavior is for regular users to have access to the serial number. The serial number being readable by root only on Linux is an issue of Linux itself. IMO, there's no need for root privileges to simply read the serial number. Maybe this will get patched in the future.
