The lack of centering and obscuring of the background is a compositor issue. Which compositor are you using (kwin?)? When you change resolution from "settings" does the game resolution change accordingly?
I'm using labwc/wlroots. No. The maximum resolution that appears in the settings menu is 1600x1200 and when I select it, the game is not filled to the resolution of my monitor. However, if I press the shortcut that toggles the window's fullscreen and then press the shortcut that toggles the window's maximization state, the game is filled to my monitor's resolution.
This behavior happens with all 4 games I tested: Ghost Recon 1, Splinter Cell 1 and 2 and SWAT 4.
In Splinter Cell 1, I can set the resolution to 1920x1080 and in-game the game is filled to my monitor's resolution, but the menus, loadings and cut-scenes are not. In Splinter Cell 2 it's worse, I can't set the resolution to 1920x1080 (because the game itself doesn't support it) and even when I change to the maximum resolution that the game supports, somehow the game resets to a lower resolution (this in-game, in the menus, loadings and in the cut-scenes).
In x11, in all cases, all 4 games are filled to the resolution of my monitor. By the way, I tested this MR here (`winewayland.drv: Use virtual display devices to implement mode change emulation`) and it works perfectly like x11!
