Yeah, in general it's probably a lot easier to be confident about this patch if we restrict the locks to where they're definitely needed in earlier patches.
Looking at the rest of this patch, I'm obviously not familiar with the heap code at all, but it *looks* like it makes sense, assuming I can correctly read what's possibly-concurrent and what isn't. And the lock-free parts look correct as well.
