http://www.anthonycargile.com/blog/?p=95 is a blog post that makes it sound like we've hit the promised land already: --- snip --- In addition to multisim 8, I have also successfully installed Microsoft Office 2003 (for the proprietary features not present in OpenOffice required by some classes, mainly wizards), Visio 2003, and Autodesk Maya PLE 8. Some programs I have had installed for a while which run fine are Project 64 Beta, Morrowind (PC game), Macromedia Flash 8, Macromedia Dreamweaver 8, IDA Pro, and Quicken Premier 2008. After looking back on all of these Windows programs successfully running on a non-windows platform (Ubuntu Linux, in this case), I have to personally congradulate the Wine team for their efforts on providing the Windows compatability layer for Linux, and the winetricks script author for further enhancing that ability with Microsoft CoreFonts, .net, and registry key installers. Linux-Windows compatability has really gotten to the point now where a Windows Operating system is almost not even necessary in a Virtual Machine, thanks to Wine, OpenOffice.org, Mono, and the native Linux enhancements for usability in general. These effort have really made the permanent switch much easier than it would have been in 2005 or 2006, since back then one would get in all kinds of trouble for ditching Windows for something else, even in an environment where a Macintosh is somewhat accepted. But now, I can freely roam with native Ubuntu running, since all of my hardware on my 2007 laptop works, and all required programs needed can also run with no problems. --- snip ---

Have you filed a bug report against glibc yet? I didn't see one at http://sourceware.org/bugzilla/ Please be sure to attach a simple C program that reproduces the problem, or better yet, a patch to add a test case to their test suite.

Implementing textures functions of d3dx using an extern library.

D3DX supports a wide range of file types for textures. Instead of rewriting everything from scratch, the best would certainly be to use some image processing library to handle them. As a bonus, this would allow lighter code. Some of those library are : SDL_Image : easy to use, but loading an image using a SDL_Surface is quite heavy. Moreover, the files supported are not enough for d3dx. MagickWand/MagickCore, the libraries on which imagemagick is based : Hard to use, and very heavy. Supports every format thet d3dx supports. FreeImage : Quite easy to use, the only files not supported are DIB and PFM... Not so widely represented. I had to recompile it, as packages for it are not available for 32 bits. (I use a 64 bits ubuntu system). Here is an implementation of D3DXGetImageInfoFromFileInMemory using FreeImage. Suggestions and comments are welcomed. PS : Please CC me your potential answers, as I'm not a subscriber of this list.

Any reason this isn't tested? I don't know about this function in particular, but there have been games that were confused by NOT clearing output to NULL on error (not in GetDepthStencilSurface though). Also regardless of setting or not-setting to NULL, the warning may have its uses when reading +d3d log in the process of debugging something. These changes may be correct, but they need a test. Take a look at dlls/d3d9/tests/device.c to see how the other tests look. I guess the changes are likely to be correct, but they have to be tested
