Perhaps the installer detects the OS version and acts differently when it's set to 2000 or XP. The program immediately exits when run. However, while searching for a demo version I discovered there's a patch for this game which is apparently necessary to run it under Windows XP. With that update, the game runs. It then crashes later on with an infamous ???Unknown Exception dialog.
