With the extension installed, if one tries to open an html email the call to the IErenderer.dll causes Pegasus to hard crash.. The Pegasus creates some temp files from the email message, and uses WPM$xxx.PM$ format for files. Was thinking perhaps in the passing of filename with $ inside them might cause issue since Linux treats the $ as marking a variable? With IERender extion it creates these two file 1110 05-16-2025 08:18 WPM$M1PL.PM$ 56167 05-16-2025 08:18 WPM$SXGZ.PM$ With extension uninstalled it creates these 3 files 1536 05-16-2025 08:15 STO30e6.tmp 1536 05-16-2025 08:15 STO30e7.tmp 56167 05-16-2025 08:15 WPM$Z65Z.PM$ Note both of the 56167 byte files are identical?? The purpose of extension is to better handle displaying html messages. Without it, some messages don't display as they should. One can then opt to open messages in a browser, and they will display fine, but then replying doesn't work. The crash only occurs when running under wine, as opposed to running in Windows. I found a workaround that seems to point to the problem. I found that if I clear the check-box for "Show Preview" in the file save dialog box, the file saves normally. Tri-tools.com has been very cooperative in offering help, rather than simply saying "We don't support Linux" as so many developers do when asked for help. Here is a paste of their latest response to information that I had given them: >> If a report file is generated, it will be stored in your Temp folder. If you click Skip, the installer works but hangs after installation. The attached patch fixes the problem, mostly. For some reason you have to click the background after closing Notepad, and the installer still hangs at the end. The Cygwin code assumes CPUID leaf 0x0d to indicate in EBX a 64-byte-aligned value. That may or may not be true on current Windows systems, but on current Linux systems running Wine, with recent CPUs, a CPU feature called "PKU" or "PKRU" (memory protection keys for userspace), enabled by default, indicates an additional 8-byte XSAVE area. This makes the Cygwin code attempt to xsave to a non-64-byte aligned area, which causes a segfault and abnormal program termination. While this is clearly a bug, it's a bug that apparently cannot be triggered by current Windows systems. This means Wine fails to be bug-for-bug compatible in this case. I don't think there's an easy way around that: we'd have to trap XGETBV and CPUID instructions to pretend that a feature that is enabled by Linux actually isn't available. It would have been nice if the Linux kernel had provided a way to disable the pku feature on a per-process basis, but AFAICT, it didn't. The nopku kernel command line argument makes things work, but requires a reboot and disables the very useful PKU feature for the entire system. This rarely happens, so it's not a real problem for me, but I don't know if it could help you fix this. The main menu is fully visible, the mouse cursor itself too, but it's not actually possible to click on any of the buttons (or other interactive elements). Nothing seems to happen, when clicking on anything. Note: In winecfg, it's necessary to "Emulate a virtual desktop". Otherwise the game will start in full screen mode, and due to that described non-interactivity, it becomes impossible to leave the game anymore, so you will get perpetually stuck unless rebooting the computer. SUMMARY Under the wrong circumstances, a program doing many memory allocations from multiple threads can experience more than 100x performance degradation. I'm seeing this in my own Rust program, which has 16 sometimes-compute-bound threads on a 12 CPU machine. This works fine on Microsoft Windows and when compiled for Linux. Under Wine, it can be over 100x slower. Multiple threads are banging on a spinlock at _InterlockedCompareExchange [Z:\usr\src\packages\BUILD\include\winnt.h:6630] in ntdll spin_lock [Z:\usr\src\packages\BUILD\dlls\ntdll\sync.c:937] in ntdll This is the spin lock around the queue for pausing threads. DISCUSSION This looks like futex congestion. That's a known kind of problem, but doesn't seem to have been seen in Wine before. It may be that some programs just run really slow under Wine, and nobody knows why. The code in NTDLL is clearly intended to handle the fast case without doing an OS-level lock. Under light load, that's O(1). But under heavy load, with multiple threads pounding on spinlocks, each spinlock waits longer, and there are multiple threads, so it becomes O(N^2). Opinion: This is one of 2 bugs preventing using TortoiseSVN fully in wine. The other is 50756. If these 2 bugs are fixed, TortoiseSVN could be used fully, easing the transition of users whose jobs rely on SVN to Linux. Currently some companies still use SVN and I've tried all the free SVN clients for Linux, and none of them come close to the level of convenience and intuitiveness that TortoiseSVN provides. I have nemo actions ready to enable full usage in of TortoiseSVN in Linux if these 2 bugs are fixed. This would help me personally tremendously, as digging through old revisions in alternate SVN branches is part of my job and extremely difficult with any SVN client other than TortoiseSVN using TortoiseMerge. The problem is in the main/postprocess/rebase directory, where it tries to rebase binaries, ultimately calling C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0\Bin\rebase (from the Windows SDK), which tries to call the unimplemented function imagehlp.dll.ReBaseImage64, which causes a crash during the build. Since rebasing is just done for better performance, it's not critical and can be worked around by commenting out the relevant makefile command. Still, Wine should ideally support this API, and it's good to document applications that need it. Neither of them work in Wine. 1. After performing a manual save in the game, a 'save successful' message is shown on the screen, however, if I open the <Load game> menu, it is empty. 2. When the player dies there is an option to restore the last saved game: clicking on this option results in a crash as can be seen in the attached log file. The demo version doesn't let you save the game, but it does perform an autosave, thus the crash can be reproduced with the demo too. Here's how: 1. install the demo, the game needs native d3dx9_36 and dxdiagn (bug #32163). 2. start the demo with Lockdown.exe, skip the intros. In the menu choose <Single Player> - <Start Mission> and wait until the game is loaded. 3. press '4' to instruct teammates to stay back. There will be some bad guys around the corner, step to them without shooting so the player dies pretty soon. 4. the menu with statistics appears, click on <Load Last Save>...the game crashes at this point. There's nothing serious in the terminal, the game's own log file contains: [ERROR | IkeStateMgr::SaveGame | 735] Could not open file c:/program files/ubisoft/red storm entertainment/rainbow six lockdown demo/data/save/game/autosave.sav This directory structure does exist in Wine: C:/Program Files/Ubisoft/Red Storm Entertainment/Rainbow Six Lockdown Demo/data/save Inside ../save there should be a /game directory which contains the saved games. This directory (as well as an autosave.sav) should be created when you start the first mission. For some reason the /game directory is not created in Wine. Workaround: you have to manually create the /game directory before starting the game the first time.
