Tested with a clean 'prefix' and minimal WinSCP installation. Cause seems to be as following, quoting comment from the ticket : "The messages that indicate scroll bar position, WM_HSCROLL and WM_VSCROLL, provide only 16 bits of position data. The crash only occurs when running under wine, as opposed to running in Windows. I found a workaround that seems to point to the problem. I found that if I clear the check-box for "Show Preview" in the file save dialog box, the file saves normally. Tri-tools.com has been very cooperative in offering help, rather than simply saying "We don't support Linux" as so many developers do when asked for help. Here is a paste of their latest response to information that I had given them: >> If a report file is generated, it will be stored in your Temp folder. The >>file will start with VC and have an extension of .vccrd. >> >>The crash info that you already submitted was sufficient to find the cause, >>though. If you click Continue, the installer opens INSTALL.TXT in Notepad. When you close Notepad, the installer should continue, but instead it hangs. If you click Skip, the installer works but hangs after installation. The attached patch fixes the problem, mostly. For some reason you have to click the background after closing Notepad, and the installer still hangs at the end. This rarely happens, so it's not a real problem for me, but I don't know if it could help you fix this. SUMMARY Under the wrong circumstances, a program doing many memory allocations from multiple threads can experience more than 100x performance degradation. I'm seeing this in my own Rust program, which has 16 sometimes-compute-bound threads on a 12 CPU machine. This works fine on Microsoft Windows and when compiled for Linux. Under Wine, it can be over 100x slower. Multiple threads are banging on a spinlock at _InterlockedCompareExchange [Z:\usr\src\packages\BUILD\include\winnt.h:6630] in ntdll spin_lock [Z:\usr\src\packages\BUILD\dlls\ntdll\sync.c:937] in ntdll This is the spin lock around the queue for pausing threads. DISCUSSION This looks like futex congestion. That's a known kind of problem, but doesn't seem to have been seen in Wine before. It may be that some programs just run really slow under Wine, and nobody knows why. The code in NTDLL is clearly intended to handle the fast case without doing an OS-level lock. Under light load, that's O(1). But under heavy load, with multiple threads pounding on spinlocks, each spinlock waits longer, and there are multiple threads, so it becomes O(N^2). The problem is in the main/postprocess/rebase directory, where it tries to rebase binaries, ultimately calling C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0\Bin\rebase (from the Windows SDK), which tries to call the unimplemented function imagehlp.dll.ReBaseImage64, which causes a crash during the build. Since rebasing is just done for better performance, it's not critical and can be worked around by commenting out the relevant makefile command. Still, Wine should ideally support this API, and it's good to document applications that need it. And it is remarkable that Wine works so well, when building a project with ~70000 C++ files, 12 million lines of code, 37 external libraries, code generation during the build, calls to many Cygwin tools and Perl scripts, Java and Ant, .NET tools, and lots more.
