The game then starts normally, but the console window stays open in the background and is visible again after exiting the game. It's hard to tell if a similar console window is opened when running the game on Windows; if there is one, it must be immediately closed because it's definitely gone by the time the game exits. Mostly noticable in a selected few rooms, havent noticed any case where it did not run faster than intended in those areas. This bug isnt specific to said areas however, also noticed a case where a previously not affected area sped up after a transition but that only happened once. Normally the game would then appear, but it almost always just freezes at the loading screen. The one exception I found is the basic and advanced training, which always finishes loading and is playable. This seems to only happen on Mac. Menu transitions is when the game transitions from "Menu -> Cutscene" or "Menu -> Game", "Game -> Menu", so on and so forth. I'm grouping both games into the same issue because both games, as far as I know, use the same engine, and both exhibit the same bug. While FIFA World Cup 98 does not have a demo version, FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 does: https://archive.org/details/FIFAWC98 FIFA World Cup 98 freezes right after the splash screen of the game (where the game transitions from the splash screen to a cutscene). FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 freezes right after the game tries to start a friendly match. I did try using older Wine versions (the earliest version I tried was Wine 5.15), but it seems that this bug has been present for a long time. The bug can be worked around by using "taskset -c 0 wine ..." when starting the game, using "WINEDEBUG="+thread wine ..." or setting the kernel parameter "maxcpus=1". It isn't a full workaround, the freeze still happens sometimes, but it does work well enough that you can get into a game and play the game. Audio is played normally and the app proceeds to the main menu after the video ends. Also, pressing a key aborts the video as expected. The video is visible on a native XP machine. Both apps use smackw32.dll to display the video. You may add [Smacker] Debug=1 to win.ini and set WINEDEBUG=+debugstr. I've not yet written an AppDB entry for either of these 2 children apps. "5 Freunde" is Enid Blyton's "Famous 5" or "Club des cinq". Having two issues for one report was confusing. The issue here is that the UI only updates after the application has been moved around on screen (as shown in the attachment). This occurs on a fresh install of Wine Staging and first noticed in 8.13 (but may be even older). There have been concerns raised that this could be related to the JUCE framework, however that is uncertain. "...the dropdowns don't show the updated selection until a full repaint of the settings window (by closing and opening it again). There are possibly related messages in the log, I would check whether other applications built with JUCE are affected as well." Anyway, the solution involves changing the second argument in SearchPathA inside pif_cmd from progname to filename, then altering both progpath and progname as a concatenated string that is then passed into start_dosbox, whence DOSBox opens and automatically opens the executable at the same location as the PIF. I have tested Wine on two PIF files using this patch, and both seem to work as intended. When wine runs in virtual desktop mode and the intro video of MechCommander is over, as soon as the mouse pointer leaves the window, the game freezes and I get a backtrace on the console. There are no errors or fixmes directly related to the crash. If I then use ctrl+c in the console, the internal debugger of MechCommander starts (this also happens if the crash has not happened), but does not seem to be of any use (missing debug symbols I think), but at least the program does not die totally. If I disable direct draw for MechCommander (edit prefs.cfg in game directory and set "b DirectDraw = F") the game runs in windowed mode itself and I have not seen the crash happen. I have seen it happen with MechCommander Gold and also with the free demo of MechCommander. For that purpose, I installed the xboxdrv (the userspace driver for xbox 360 and 1 gamepads) and after running xboxdrv with the command xboxdrv --silent --trigger-as-button, I started the game. The game has support for joysticks (I made sure I enabled joystick support in the in-game options). However, the game does not detect it, since it does not respond to any button presses or axis movements from the gamepad. When running the game from the terminal, the output I get with the gamepad attached to the PC is attached to this bug report. I have tried running the game natively on Windows 7 and XP SP3 with the gamepad attached and it is detected and runs as expected. Furthermore, by running STO with apimonitor from http://www.rohitab.com/apimonitor in Windows, I was able to determine that the game uses direct input 8, specifically the IDirectInputDevice8 and IDirectInput8 interfaces, to detect and control the system mouse and any attached joystick. It uses in particular the IDirectInput8::EnumDevices to find any available joysticks. In order to determine if this is an issue specific to this game running on Wine, I tried using the gamepad with another game well supported by wine and which also supports joysticks: Trackmania Nations Forever. This one detects the gamepad as a joystick automatically and by adding +dinput to WINEDEBUG, I noticed the following line on the output: Code: trace:dinput:IDirectInputWImpl_EnumDevices (this=0x12f718,0x0004 'DIDEVTYPE_JOYSTICK',0x8fc5a0,0x12238a0,0001).
