[Bug 59202] New: FIFA World Cup 98 and FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 freezes during menu transitions
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59202 Bug ID: 59202 Summary: FIFA World Cup 98 and FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 freezes during menu transitions Product: Wine Version: 10.20 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: -unknown Assignee: wine-bugs@list.winehq.org Reporter: winehq@mrpowergamerbr.com Distribution: --- Created attachment 80077 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=80077 FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 running with WINEDEBUG="+thread,+sync" When running FIFA World Cup 98 or FIFA: Road to World Cup 98, the game freezes during menu transitions. Menu transitions is when the game transitions from "Menu -> Cutscene" or "Menu -> Game", "Game -> Menu", so on and so forth. I'm grouping both games into the same issue because both games, as far as I know, use the same engine, and both exhibit the same bug. While FIFA World Cup 98 does not have a demo version, FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 does: https://archive.org/details/FIFAWC98 FIFA World Cup 98 freezes right after the splash screen of the game (where the game transitions from the splash screen to a cutscene). FIFA: Road to World Cup 98 freezes right after the game tries to start a friendly match. I did try using older Wine versions (the earliest version I tried was Wine 5.15), but it seems that this bug has been present for a long time. The bug can be worked around by using "taskset -c 0 wine ..." when starting the game, using "WINEDEBUG="+thread wine ..." or setting the kernel parameter "maxcpus=1". It isn't a full workaround, the freeze still happens sometimes, but it does work well enough that you can get into a game and play the game. Watch out that the game does NOT run on Windows 11. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59202 --- Comment #1 from Ken Sharp <imwellcushtymelike@gmail.com> --- This works for me with no workarounds with Wine 11.19. Can you re-test? -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59202 --- Comment #2 from Fernando Casas Schössow <casasfernando@outlook.com> --- Created attachment 82255 --> http://bugs.winehq.org/attachment.cgi?id=82255 fifartwc98_Wine_11.19_test.log I just tested with Wine 11.19 and I can consistently reproduce the problem (log attached). Issue seems to be deadlock potentially caused by a race condition in the game code that can be partially mitigated (it happens less) by two things: restricting or setting process affinity to a single core on multi-core systems (e.g. taskset -c 1) and also by slowing things down a bit by making Wine trace/log additional stuff (WINEDEBUG=+threads) as I posted here: https://www.reddit.com/r/wine_gaming/comments/bvxv1w/comment/ntm6ch6/?utm_so... For what it worth, there is Windows application compatibility file available for this game that among other flags enables EmulateSlowCPU and SingleProcAffinity: https://www.zeus-software.com/files/nglide/fifa98_patch.zip I think OP is the same as the author of this nice analysis on this issue done here (possibly based on my comment on Reddit above): https://github.com/MrPowerGamerBR/FIFAWorldCup98LinuxWinePatch As OP mentioned and as I observed as well, issue seems to be related to FMV cutscene transitions (Intro FMV => Menu, Pre-Match FMV => In game, etc). @Ken did you test this with the demo version available in archive.org or with the full retail game? I'm not sure the demo includes any cutscenes and without them I'm not sure if the issue can be reproduced. PS: apologies for the links to external sites but I think they are useful to provide additional context about this issue. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59202 --- Comment #3 from Ken Sharp <imwellcushtymelike@gmail.com> --- Indeed I tested menu transitions in the demo so my testing can probably be ignored. Links to external sites are absolutely fine. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
