But I appear to be the first to have actually traced it down to wined3d. It happens on wine, wine-staging, all currently available versions of proton and generally just everywhere. Overview: The game has a choice of several 3D rendering APIs (Primarily: DX6, DX7, GL, Glide), but it also has a 2D rendering layer that is used to render it's GUI which always runs on ddraw no matter how the game is configured. This means that in both wine and proton, and even if using d7vk which delegates 2d tasks to wined3d, this rendering is always wined3d's responsibility; hence where the bug must be. As for the bug itself, there are several 'dynamic' fields in the GUI where the background behind those fields have a permanent ghosting effect, anything rendered over those fields will leave behind a trail behind. More often than not this ghosting effect will be displaying cursor trails. I've attached a visual example as well to showcase the issue. You can also see more examples on the game's proton git page as well: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/1805 Another potential hint about the nature of the issue is that most of the affected surfaces should be a solid black color, the kind that's not a texture. The only workaround I've been able to find is to use dxwrapper(https://github.com/elishacloud/dxwrapper) but it's likely other wrappers like dgvoodoo might work, I just haven't been able to launch the game with any of them. Steps to Reproduce: - Launch the game, doesn't matter how it is configured so long as it runs (default should work) - Either load a game or start a new game - While playing, hover the mouse over the HP display (numbers on the right/left edges of the screen) Actual Results: The cursor left a trail in the background behind the HP numbers. Expected Results: Background behind the HP number should remain black, always. The simple graphics modes where each particle is a circle work great, with perfect performance. The game requires no install and starts up instantly. The problem is that the higher graphics modes that use shaders do not work. I have attached a picture for an example. The fire effect is visible on top of a black screen. From previous experience I know that this caused when OE-Cake cannot recognize your graphics card, at least that's how it is caused in Windows on real hardware. I've played some pretty advanced games on WINE so I have a feeling this could be fixed somehow. An alternate failure mode that several users have reported is that the shader modes do work, but in the lower graphics modes each circle representing a particle is replaced by a square making it look like Minecraft. Linux native apps tend to do just fine , but there's no way for VR capable windows apps running trough Wine to detect/use VR devices. VR is supposed to be supported on Proton and hacky Wine-Proton hybrids, where first option limits support to apps from Steam and second one is a bit cumbersome to get it working. To solve this issue wine environment could provide thin VR runtime environment that catches calls from apps and direct those to linux native VR runtime that is installed on user system. Wine OpenXR library shouldn't be that complex as it'd be simple 1:1 mapping of OpenXR API. If I manually alter the code to pass `NULL` to `pszOut`, the count is updated to the actual length of the command string. Happening at least since V9.0 Renderer: dgVoodoo 2 to DXMT 0.73 Basically, if I set the resolution to the maximum in MCSM (2880x1800), the cursor becomes smaller, moves slower and importantly the bounding box for the cursor becomes halved such where the bottom-right corner is now situated at the middle of the screen, so the cursor can only go from top-right to middle of the screen. Note this all happens with High Resolution mode on, The cursor's movement speed, bounding box and size are correct when the resolution is set at the minimum (800x600) resolution. In `dlls/d2d1/device.c`, when `IDWriteFontFace_GetRecommendedRenderingMode()` fails, Wine falls back to `DWRITE_RENDERING_MODE_OUTLINE`. This mode produces empty glyphs with FreeType. Additionally, `DWRITE_RENDERING_MODE_ALIASED` produces unreadable pixelated text. Forcing `DWRITE_RENDERING_MODE_NATURAL` instead fixes both issues. To reproduce: 1. Install Xfer Serum2 via yabridge 2. Load plugin in REAPER 3. Text is invisible or pixelated Tested on Wine 11.1, Ubuntu, X11. He claims he wants apps like wine to use a inhibition API though that seems like it would hurt non-gnome users who want to limit screen time or something. I am reluctant to suggest humoring him, but if there were an option in wine for gnome users to activate this inhibition API thing it would help ubuntu users and other distros using Gnome play games despite ebassi's sabotage. The effect then persists across plugins and even newly launched plugins until the window manager is restarted (logging out and logging back in also works). As I was debugging this I did notice that using WINEDEBUG=+relay slowed things down enough for the menus to open again. With yabridge the breakage is reached pretty quickly if the project uses many Windows plugins through Wine. I've been able to consistently reproduce this with the standalone versions Toontrack's plugins (EZBass, EZDrummer 3), which use JUCE although I don't know if that's relevant, by simply clicking on the menus repeatedly. Relatively quickly the clicks seemingly stop working as the menus stop opening. I did regression testing and found out that in the already broken session using Wine 10.4 makes menus open again. The exact commit that results in the menus not working in an already broken session is 30fa691d99df7d6dfe37d16fe708d603919f9fd1. However, reverting it for the Wine 11.1 has no effect and everything remains broken. So I did more regression testing and found out that with Wine 10.16 and a fresh session the breakage never happens. The commit that results in the breakage is f24d38e1efe96598918b59ceb268fbfbf17f558d, which reverted for Wine 10.17 fixes things but not for Wine 11.1. Commit 0a7082d37efba17f5badea361c8727f424192e68 added a condition to f24d38e1efe9 that resulted in a merge conflict so I reverted that as well. With the commits from the previous paragraph reverted, the issue persisted and with more regression testing I discovered that commit c6cab075f512f95b0f350d0d8c51fff3e3c44a9f (related to https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59102) also needed to be reverted. After that the menus open normally and the session-wide breakage doesn't happen. In summary, commits f24d38e1efe96598918b59ceb268fbfbf17f558d and c6cab075f512f95b0f350d0d8c51fff3e3c44a9f result in a session-wide state where the popup menus stop opening entirely in multiple audio plugins. Initially they open normally but by constantly clicking on the menu buttons, they first start to open less reliably until them not opening becomes permanent. Restarting the window manager fixes it. This happens in a KWin Wayland session but not in an X11 session nor did it happen using IceWM. I was succeeded with bootstrap instead of LXC because bootstrap keeps root files after fail, so it is possible to chroot and install 32-bit kbd from Debian stable, then continue normal installation. Also, I was able to build inside 32-bit chroot only with --enable-archs=i386 So the average Ubuntu user can't just do bisecting following these instructions. Better integration, since the application run under Wine would use the native desktop file pickers, complete with the user's Places sidebar bookmarks and any other customizations they've enacted. 2. More practical security, since Wine could then be run in a filesystem sandbox, with the portal host mounting files/directories into the sandboxed environment on demand. I'd suggest a three-state option exposed through winecfg's Desktop Integration: 1. Opportunistically (Qt's approach to integrating support for XDG portals into QFileDialog provides precedent for making this the default. Uses the portal-based file chooser unless an application requests a combination of OPENFILENAME settings that cannot be represented by the portal API.) 2. Forced (An option for power users to set on a per-application basis to intentionally sacrifice the application's customizations in favour of better integration with the understanding that things may break.) 3. Never (An option for users who prefer consistency between their Windows applications over consistency with the rest of their desktop or have deleted the Z: mapping and configured their Wine prefix around the idea of only working with drive letters.) These high-level preferences could also apply equally well to any other platform's native file chooser, should integration with it be implemented. I am on Ubuntu 24.04 (openssl 3.0.x) I use official wine stable 11.0 I created a new prefix and installed dotnet 6, dotnet 8, dotnet 9. I installed a tool that runs "dotnet build". dotnet downloads nuget packages. dotnet checks with the root certificates and finds the timestamp is outdated (NU3037 and NU3028). I found out that dotnet does not use Linux root certificates for verification but the root certificates managed by crypt32. I opened up control.exe and checked the certificates. Here I found no root certificates. I tried to convert certificates with openssl from Ubuntu from api.nuget.org directly (pem format -> cer format). The import mechanism of the root certificates fails with "unknown format". My question is: How do the cer format differ between openssl and the format that is used by wine for importing root certificates? When I try to install the 2025 version of the H & R Block tax software, it seems to have an issue with msiexec. To start, I create a fresh WINEPREFIX using: `wineboot --init; winecfg -v win10`; and then try to run the installer in it using `wine HRBlock_Deluxe-State_2025_RD.exe`. After clicking Next a few times, agreeing to the license, and accepting the default install location, it starts the installation. However, a message box pops up with the usage text for msiexec, see attachment. This is specifically a WOW64 regression, since using a build of Wine 10 without WOW64 works fine. A system process is not allowed to keep a desktop alive, per the logic in server/winstation.c. When such a process tries to create a window, such as by calling MessageBoxA(), it ends up in winstation_init(), which creates a desktop and assigns it to the current process. This launches explorer.exe. However, this desktop isn't actually ever owned by the service, because it is a system process. This is an unstable state. If any other process/thread is assigned/released a desktop at this point, server/winstation.c will kill explorer.exe by sending it WM_CLOSE. This a race. Sequence of events: - Service Process starts - It becomes a system process after running the main service dispatcher - Service calls MessageBoxA() - X11DRV_create_win_data -> init_clip_window() grabs the clip_window ID from explorer.exe - Some other process/thread owns a desktop and becomes system, exits, or whatever. - The close_timeout triggers, and explorer.exe is told to exit - The clip_window is destroyed - Any clip_window operations (such as ungrab_clipping_window() via X11DRV_ClipCursor) trigger a BadWindow X11 error and kill the service This is happening on Proton partially due to some Proton changes (that cause the sequence of events above to actually happen almost 100% reliably), but I believe the fundamental problem exists in vanilla Wine. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. This happens with the Nouveau Vulkan driver/Mesa 25.3.4. and with Nvidia binary 580.126.09 as well. Reverting the following commit on top of Wine-11.2 fixes the problem for me: commit 7be265ec89a89db65f0b13f9b7c20c34573b6bb4 wined3d: Avoid some invalidation when texture states are set redundantly. The game is an oldie from 1998, but it runs reasonably well in Wine. BUT THIS IS WRONG. "waveOutID" should be equal to WAVE_MAPPER, which equal to -1, as you can see in point (1). 3) waveOutGetDevCaps((UINT)waveOutID, &waveoutcaps, sizeof(waveoutcaps)); As result, this call to waveOutGetDevCaps() fails with return value of MMSYSERR_BADDEVICEID. Click on the highlighted <Tour>, <Skip all>, <Play> buttons. Click the button right next to <Proceed> in the lower right corner. Click <Save>...the game is saved. Now click <Restore> in the options menu and select the previously saved game. The game is loaded without errors but if you click <Proceed> the game crashes. The demo version doesn't allow to load a saved game from the title screen. It is not really a wine-9.0, it is crossover-base v24.0.7 which is based on wine-9 but I don't know where it is better to report. The application is X64, DirectX9 using .Net 4.0 (dotnet48) and .Net Runtime (dotnet9). Not sure if other patches by CX or by me somehow influence. The is a new strange bug: At the program start it doesn't show toolbar waiting indefinite. But when I touch the mouse the interface became fullfilled. Then I choose to create a random map and wait. It requires 2 minutes in real windows but I wait very long with wine. Than I touch the mouse and the progress bar begin moving. To make the work I have to move mouse again and again. It looks like the game or the wine going to sleep every 2 seconds and wakes after I move the mouse. How it possible? I can't check with any other wine version or flavour as the my engine the only working for this game. Using git-master, I noticed that several games either have no audio at all or crash immediately on startup. In the winecfg Audio tab everything looks the same as before the regression, and the test button still emits sound. This line from the terminal output caught my attention: 0024:err:mmdevapi:init_driver No driver from L"pulse,alsa,oss,coreaudio" could be initialized. Maybe check dependencies with WINEDEBUG=warn+module. The regression test identified commit f1800451 as the first bad commit; however, reverting it alone does not fix the issue. I also had to revert commits a429176c and 7221d456 to resolve the problem. This issue is reproducible in Kyodai Mahjongg v21.42. The game offers music files in various formats (.ogg, .mid, .mod), but none of them work. There is a `FAudio_assert` in `FAudio_PlatformGetDeviceDetails`, but it gets compiled out because faudio gets compiled with NDEBUG. I suspect the culpit is the error : 0118:fixme:wininet:InternetSetFilePointer (00000004 0 00000000 0 0): stub because i tried it with a launcher of a private server and it worked fine. But with another one it doesn't. And the main difference in the logs is this error. The newspaper spins onto the screen way faster than it should. Then on the world map, once it focuses in on the first level dot, the text bounces at a very high speed, much higher than on Windows. Then the more major glitch(es): stalling issues. Clicking play to load in the level, and after clicking off the level name, the shooter takes a long time to fade in, and after every shot, especially shots that hit a wrong color on the spot board in the center, there is a very pronounced lag before you are allowed to shoot again. so much so that game playability is severely compromised. Exiting the game also takes a much longer time than it should, probably the same glitch. Since it's an older game I tried running with Windows version set to XP, the problems still occur. For comparison, in Wine 2.11 I'm getting only 4-5 fps when using nvidia 381.22. Before the regression Wine gave me 32-36 fps. Steps to reproduce the issue with the demo: 1. download and install the demo, install native d3dx9_33.dll before launching the game. 2. in the main menu start a new game, click <Next> on the character selection screen, press <Skip>. You are in a training chamber: run around in the room, rotate the camera using the right mouse button and observe how sluggish the game is. You can save the game here so you can reproduce the issue more easily the next time you enter the game. I cant change the size of the window. Its always fullscreen and just black. When i launch it with x11 then steam look normal except that the store page is black. You can also crash when you start the game (right after the introductory video). Just change the game resolution via the SplinterCellUser.ini configuration file: Resolution=1920x1080 This behavior only happens when used with DXVK. It doesn't happen with WineD3D OpenGL (it's impossible to test with WineD3D Vulkan, as it completely breaks the look of the game). And of course, it doesn't happen with winex11.drv either. - The game was installed via CD-ROM and is up to date with the latest update (v1.3). - I use labwc/wlroots as WM. - Although I'm on Arch Linux, I compile wine manually with these options: ./configure --prefix=/usr --enable-archs=i386,x86_64 --enable-win64. Consequently the user can no longer open files and can no longer access a lot of important menus in a lot of the DAWs functions, such as music sheet editor, pattern editor, etc. In Wine 8.1 this bug does not occur, and must have been introduced somewhen after (my guess is version 9). Please note that this issue does NOT relate to X11, because it happens with "Emulate a virtual desktop" checked. I tried many things to work around it, including monkey-patching Wine 10.11 source, but everything is unsuccessful. Please note due to issues with VSTs, FL Studio needs very specific combos of NOT using DXVK, and not overriding d3dcompiler_47 or dxgi with winetricks. But even if used it makes no difference. There are NO OPTIONS in FL Studio that prevent this bug (such as unchecking ultrasmooth mode or disabling window animations). Only regressing to 8.1 fixes the bug. In the logs you will see two "TQuickPopupMenuWindow" being opened. The first is the menu, the second is the sub-menu. Many versions of FL Studio and Wine are affected by this. At least since FL 20 and Wine 9. Sadly because of changes in Juce (used by many VSTs), a lot of new and critical VST plugins now do require a very recent Wine version. Hence the important features of the software are: internet connectivity, two-way radio connectivity via COM port, and system audio (allowing the user to monitor radio traffic through the computer speakers). The platform is Mint 22.2 (6.14.0-37-generic), with Wine 11.0-rc4. Since the software is 32-bit, I am running a 32-bit Wine PREFIX. To get the WIRES-X internet connectivity running, I had to also install wininet via winetricks. The problem is that the WIRES-X software crashes when the radio detects an incoming signal. This obviously doesn't happen if the software is running natively under Windows, so seems to be a Wine bug. I have attached both the backtrace provided by Wine, and also the terminal output including the command I ran to launch the software. Without any technical Wine knowledge, I'm having difficulty understanding the backtrace, but am guessing the fault lies in the ntdll.dll module. Any ideas what might be going wrong? The reason is simple. In programs/explorer/systray.c:initialize_systray show_systray is set to FALSE (because of show_systray = arg_show_systray && !arg_enable_shell; where arg_show_systray = 1 and arg_enable_shell = 1). After this initialize_systray calls do_show_systray once. Because of show_systray is set to FALSE do_show_systray is no longer called in shell_traywnd_proc in WM_DISPLAYCHANGE handler. This works perfectly fine when Wine's virtual desktop feature is not used (as long as the desktop environment or compositor supports the _NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY window property), but turns opaque when the feature is enabled. Steps to reproduce: 1. Inside of Roblox Studio, click on the "Help" menu at the top and then on the "Start Studio Tour" option. 2. Keep clicking the "Next" and "Skip" buttons on the "Topic" window until you get to topic 3 of 7. A Wine wrapper program called "Vinegar" can be used to make the process of setting up Roblox Studio a lot easier. As a premise it is worth noticing that LTspice has always been a wine-friendly application. Recently: - mouse pointer disappears in several dialogs - the application does not recognize when the mouse is hovering certain displayed elements (e.g. after a simulation hovering on a circuit element should change the mouse cursor into a probe, and clicking should produce a plot, but that does not work anymore) - Some windows fail to appear at all (e.g. the spice output log window) All this seen using wine in X11 mode. In Wayland mode there are other issues, but as an X11 application, wine has always worked almost flawlessly with LTspice in the recent years. Unclear to me if the issue follows a wine update, an LTspice update (don't think so) or a Kwin update (I am on KDE plasma). When the disc is inserted (and mounted with the "showassoc" mount option to avoid the issue identified in bug 57108) and this check is being performed for the first time after acknowledging the dialog box, Artcut 2009 displays the message box "An unsupported operation was attempted" twice before it exits. This error doesn't seem to happen on subsequent runs of Artcut 2009. On Windows 10, no message boxes appear after the authorization dialog is dismissed before the application exits. Looking at a relay log, I note that both appearances of the error dialog box are due to a call to GetDlgItem failing. This does not happen when i move the mouse slowly in the middle of the screen and then hold right mouse button and can rotate my character in each direction. The problem now is that when i move the mouse fast inside of the screen and i hold right mouse button then i takes a while until the mouse is captured and in the background the mouse is already on the edge of the screen and i cant rotate in that direction anymore. i tried to fix it in dlls/dinput/mouse.c warp_check() but it does not seem to ever get there. -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply.
