I know that in REAL Windows, this works fine, but as you can test from the attached sample app, the clipboard copy only really works once before the application has to be restarted for it to work again. OleSetClipboard fails with CLIPBRD_E_CANT_OPEN (0x800401D0) on the second and all subsequent calls when each call is made from a new STA thread and the main thread has OLE initialized. This pattern is used by .NET WinForms applications. Clipboard.SetText() internally spawns a new STA thread, calls OleSetClipboard, then exits the thread. The main thread keeps OLE initialized (.NET runtime), so OLE_moduleLockCount never drops to 0 and clipbrd_uninitialize() never runs on the copy threads. The cached clipboard window HWND from the first (now-dead) thread is never cleared. This is deterministic, not a race condition. 100% reproducible on Wine 9.0 through 11.0. I even tested it on the latest development branch. The buggy caching pattern has been present since the OLE clipboard was first implemented (commit 557ff419bea, July 18, 1999), so this affects every Wine version ever released. It went unnoticed because the trigger pattern (main thread keeps OLE alive + new STA threads for each clipboard operation) is specific to .NET WinForms applications. Affected application: Space Engineers (Steam App ID 244850) — Ctrl+C works once, then freezes for ~1 second on every subsequent Ctrl+C. The clipboard never updates past the first copy. This is also reported at https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/1792 STEPS TO REPRODUCE ================== Prerequisites: Main thread has OLE initialized (OleInitialize), as in any .NET application. 1. Spawn STA Thread A: OleInitialize(NULL) -> OleSetClipboard(NULL) -> OleSetClipboard(data1) -> OleFlushClipboard() -> OleUninitialize() -> thread exits Wait for Thread A to complete. 2. Paste: OpenClipboard(NULL) -> GetClipboardData(CF_TEXT) -> "first" Result: correct. 3. Spawn STA Thread B: OleInitialize(NULL) -> OleSetClipboard(NULL) Result: returns 0x800401D0 (CLIPBRD_E_CANT_OPEN) All 10 retries fail with the same error. 4. Paste: GetClipboardData(CF_TEXT) -> still "first" Expected: "second" 5. All subsequent copy attempts from new threads fail the same way. EXPECTED BEHAVIOR (Windows) =========================== Each copy succeeds immediately. After step 3, the clipboard contains "second". Tested on Windows 7, 10, and 11 -- all succeed. ACTUAL BEHAVIOR (Wine 9.0 through 11.0) ======================================== First copy succeeds. All subsequent copies fail with CLIPBRD_E_CANT_OPEN. The clipboard permanently retains the first copied text. Each failed copy takes ~1 second (10 retries x 100ms). ROOT CAUSE ========== In dlls/ole32/clipboard.c, get_clipbrd_window() caches a single HWND per process: static inline HRESULT get_clipbrd_window(ole_clipbrd *clipbrd, HWND *wnd) { if ( !clipbrd->window ) clipbrd->window = create_clipbrd_window(); *wnd = clipbrd->window; return *wnd ? S_OK : E_FAIL; } When the STA thread that created this window terminates, the window is destroyed but the stale HWND remains cached. clipbrd_uninitialize() (which clears it) only runs when OLE_moduleLockCount drops to 0, which never happens in a .NET app because the main thread keeps OLE alive. PROPOSED FIX ============ Add an IsWindow() check to get_clipbrd_window(): if ( clipbrd->window && !IsWindow(clipbrd->window) ) clipbrd->window = NULL; This detects the stale handle and forces creation of a fresh window on the current thread. Patch is attached. REPRODUCER ========== A standalone GUI test app is attached (clipboard_test.c + .exe). It has two modes: Mode A (Bug): Replicates the exact .NET OLE clipboard path. - Main thread calls OleInitialize (simulates .NET environment) - Each copy spawns a new STA thread: OleInitialize -> OleSetClipboard(NULL) -> OleSetClipboard(data) -> OleFlushClipboard -> OleUninitialize -> exit - 10-retry loop with 100ms delays (matches .NET Clipboard.SetText exactly) - Three copy/paste cycles with "first", "second", "third" - Copy 1 succeeds; Copy 2 and 3 fail with 0x800401D0 Mode B (Fix): Same OLE operations but manages the clipboard window lifetime correctly, demonstrating the fix works. - All three copies succeed. Reading the DACL back (via either `GetSecurityInfo()` or `GetNamedSecurityInfoW()`) returns the original unchanged DACL. This also affects `SetNamedSecurityInfoW()`. ## Impact on MSYS2 The MSYS2/Cygwin runtime implements `chmod()` by translating POSIX mode bits into Windows ACL entries and calling `NtSetSecurityObject()` (which `SetSecurityInfo` wraps). Even though AoEII used to work fine in 2009 (everything worked fine back then). So I tried it on wine 10.1 on Mac OS. Doesn't work either. (this is a similar bug to https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=59701 , but is on a different OS and a different newer wine version) NOTHING WORKS ON WINE ANYMORE. What the _HELL_ happened? This used to be a great opensource project. Back when gen X and millenials were working on it. Zoomers threw most of the millenial and gen X "old men" (sorry "old maaallleesss" as they call them) out of their own projects (even RMS... though he's pre-gen X): and now there are only excuses given, everythings in a state of flux and broken. We had a time, Gen X and Millenials, where we collectively made a good stable and secure system. 2009. Had Grsecurity, working wine, Xorg, etc. Hans Reiser was still respected for what he contributed (first Journaling FS for Linux). "Show us the code" was still the ideal. Now it's all about "pad my resume" "Be an Indian Woman ruling over Debian" "hire random guy called Appplebaum to head Tor" "f the pale and stale mysogninsts who created free software, especially RMS!!!" etc etc It's been brigaded and taken over. The consensus cracked, because the people who actually did the programming work are no-longer the rulers of the projects: other "managers" are. Therefore I asked for inclusion of [1] "spurious short writes", which got accepted at 2025-04-25. Thank you very much for it. Unfortunately short after it I found there is still an issue, which was a few months not there. So I started bisecting and arrived at [2] d9d012965de, "ntdll: Always map files as writable and adjust permissions.", committed at 2025-03-25. Unfortuntately this can not be cleanly reverted at current git, but with three more commits reverted it makes a wine tree, which can be used with rr-debugger [2]. I could reduce the changes of this 4 commits to a few lines which, are also able to produce a wine tree usable with rr-debugger [3]. This patch is only changing behaviour once for each .exe process, when the session shared memory gets mapped in via the fd received from wineserver. With unmodified Wine this is currently done with a MAP_PRIVATE flag, which turns out is currently just mapping the file content into the process, but does not receive the updates from wineserver. To investigate if this can be fixed in rr I opened [4]. Unfortunately this would be expected to create a overall slowdown for rr. Therefore I wonder if this change was intentional, to map the session shared memory with mmap(MAP_PRIVATE)? When looking at virtual_map_user_shared_data the shared memory gets mapped with mmap(MAP_SHARED). Would something like [3] be acceptable for inclusion? Result: garbage line endpoint, undefined visual behavior. Reasonable fix would be to use `arc->point` (the arc's specified end point) as the line endpoint in the degenerate case — but the function signature doesn't currently expose `arc` to the caller of `d2d_figure_add_lines()`, so either `d2d_arc_to_bezier()` should write `arc->point` into `points[0]` before returning 0, or `d2d_figure_add_arc()` should pass `&arc->point` directly. --- ### Issue 2 — Typo in arc center transform: `m._12 * center.x` should be `m._12 * center.y` In `d2d_arc_to_bezier()` after computing the arc center: ```c m._31 = 0.5f * (arc->point.x + start_point->x); m._32 = 0.5f * (arc->point.y + start_point->y); if (!zero_center) { m._31 += (m._11 * center.x + m._12 * center.x); /* second term should be center.y */ m._32 += (m._21 * center.x + m._22 * center.y); /* this line is correct */ } ``` The first line uses `center.x` twice. The intended computation is the linear matrix-vector product `M * center`: ``` (_31, _32) += (M11 * cx + M12 * cy, M21 * cx + M22 * cy) ``` so the first line should be: ```c m._31 += (m._11 * center.x + m._12 * center.y); ``` Effect is invisible when `m._12 == 0` (i.e. `arc->rotationAngle == 0`), which is the most common case in UI rendering. For the arc endpoint (`arc->point`) that is correct. For the radius vectors `(width, 0)` and `(0, height)` it is wrong: those represent direction/length, not absolute positions, and should be transformed with the linear part only. Concretely, with a translation `(tx, ty)`: ``` transform of (width, 0) = (width * _11 + tx, width * _12 + ty) length(...) = sqrt((width*_11 + tx)^2 + (width*_12 + ty)^2) ``` The correct value is `sqrt((width*_11)^2 + (width*_12)^2) = width * sqrt(_11^2 + _12^2)`, the magnitude of the linear part only. Render — random line endpoints will appear. - **Issue 2**: Use `AddArc()` with `rotationAngle != 0` (e.g. 30°) with a non-degenerate arc. Compare against native Direct2D in Windows — the arc center will be slightly displaced. - **Issue 3**: Wrap a path containing an arc in `ID2D1TransformedGeometry` with a transform that has both a non-trivial linear part *and* a translation. Stream the transformed geometry — the arc radius will be wrong. --- ## Affected versions `wine-11.0` through `wine-11.8`. All three issues are present unchanged across the range. ## Reporter context These came up while reviewing the 11.x → 12.0 rebase plan for an out-of-tree D2D1 patch series targeted at JUCE 8 / VSTGUI plugin compatibility. Wine does not properly release the directory handle that was used as the subprocess's CWD after the process terminates. On real Windows, removing the directory succeeds immediately after the subprocess exits. ## Impact on MSYS2 The MSYS2/Cygwin runtime maps `ERROR_SHARING_VIOLATION` to `EBUSY` (errno 16). Many MSYS2 test suite tests create a temporary directory, `fork()` + `exec()` a child process (which inherits the CWD), wait for the child to exit, then call `rmdir()` to clean up. Under Wine, this cleanup fails with `EBUSY`, causing the test harness to report failures even though the actual test logic passed. When the process exits, Wine should close this handle so that the directory is no longer held open. Instead, the handle appears to leak or be released asynchronously, causing an immediate `RemoveDirectoryW` to hit a sharing violation. This differs from native MSVCRT behavior and from other C libraries (glibc, etc) which handle this correctly.
