When running Deus Ex: Revision mod using regular WineHQ build (for Debian testing), it crashes during audio initialization [Galaxy Audio]. See attached screenshot. But when I compile Wine myself using this set up with explicit CPU architecture set to znver4: export CXXFLAGS="-march=znver4" export CFLAGS="$CXXFLAGS" export CROSSCFLAGS="$CXXFLAGS" It doesn't crash. My CPU is AMD Ryzen 9 7950X (Zen 4). I don't see anything clear in the log output. What can the issue be? And do you have any suggestions how to get more diagnostic for this? It was reduced on the tray and its icon was blinking to notify that there were new messages / activities in channels or private messages. I clicked on it to restore the window and see the messages and wine gave me this backtrace (see the attachment). I was forced to quit mIRC and restart it again. This rarely happens, so it's not a real problem for me, but I don't know if it could help you fix this. Other infos: - Executable path: D:\mIRC\mirc.exe - mIRC Version: 7.72 (the latest one). - mIRC running in portable mode from a specific drive (on Wine, D:\) formatted in NTFS. - mIRC was running using some custom scripts. I want to bring up the topic of one of Wine's limitations related to its ability to run software depending on kernel-mode drivers and hypervisor-based features. Summary Some new applications have requirements of: Custom kernel-mode drivers Virtualization-based protection mechanisms Execution in virtualization-assisted mode (such as usage of VT-x / AMD-V) Such apps fail to start with Wine because: Wine lacks any possibility to load and execute kernel-mode Windows drivers There is no way to access host-level virtualization features Implementation of ntoskrnl is not capable to handle such situations Observed behavior When started: Drivers cannot load successfully or report errors Sometimes, Wine might crash or terminate without reason There are no errors that hint at necessity of virtualization or kernel-mode execution Expected / desired behavior While I know that full support of kernel-mode drivers and hypervisor-level execution is not in Wine's roadmap. It would still be nice to see the following improvements made: Detection and diagnostics Detect if the application tries to: Load kernel-mode driver Utilize virtualization instructions or hypervisor APIs Display an error that explicitly states that such functionality is not supported by Wine Documentation improvements Documentation about: Restrictions around kernel-mode execution Incompatibility of applications dependent on virtualization features Alternatives in running such programs (e.g. KVM-based VM) Research in possible hybrid solutions (long-term) Look into possible ways to integrate with the host OS's virtualization (e.g. KVM), possibly for selected scenarios, even if partially Some kind of experimental flag or limited feature set could be useful for research and tooling purposes Use cases Better diagnostics of the issue would be useful for: Debugging of incompatibilities Running software which requires virtualization or kernel-mode operation Development tools that need low-level control of the system Closing notes I realize that Wine cannot provide kernel-mode and hypervisor-based features. The main menu is fully visible, the mouse cursor itself too, but it's not actually possible to click on any of the buttons (or other interactive elements). Nothing seems to happen, when clicking on anything. Note: In winecfg, it's necessary to "Emulate a virtual desktop". Otherwise the game will start in full screen mode, and due to that described non-interactivity, it becomes impossible to leave the game anymore, so you will get perpetually stuck unless rebooting the computer. SUMMARY Under the wrong circumstances, a program doing many memory allocations from multiple threads can experience more than 100x performance degradation. I'm seeing this in my own Rust program, which has 16 sometimes-compute-bound threads on a 12 CPU machine. This works fine on Microsoft Windows and when compiled for Linux. Under Wine, it can be over 100x slower. Multiple threads are banging on a spinlock at _InterlockedCompareExchange [Z:\usr\src\packages\BUILD\include\winnt.h:6630] in ntdll spin_lock [Z:\usr\src\packages\BUILD\dlls\ntdll\sync.c:937] in ntdll This is the spin lock around the queue for pausing threads. DISCUSSION This looks like futex congestion. That's a known kind of problem, but doesn't seem to have been seen in Wine before. It may be that some programs just run really slow under Wine, and nobody knows why. The code in NTDLL is clearly intended to handle the fast case without doing an OS-level lock. Under light load, that's O(1). But under heavy load, with multiple threads pounding on spinlocks, each spinlock waits longer, and there are multiple threads, so it becomes O(N^2). Being curious I ran perf (see flamegraph screenshot) on it and saw that most of the time (almost 16s) is spent during load_init_registry_from_file. I was wondering whether there is a faster way to deserialize the registry. I built wine from source 607d214b9b33be8ee7377f194a98c01a36af803c (2026/04/05) using `./configure && make -j20`. If these 2 bugs are fixed, TortoiseSVN could be used fully, easing the transition of users whose jobs rely on SVN to Linux. Currently some companies still use SVN and I've tried all the free SVN clients for Linux, and none of them come close to the level of convenience and intuitiveness that TortoiseSVN provides. I have nemo actions ready to enable full usage in of TortoiseSVN in Linux if these 2 bugs are fixed. This would help me personally tremendously, as digging through old revisions in alternate SVN branches is part of my job and extremely difficult with any SVN client other than TortoiseSVN using TortoiseMerge. Roblox Studio appears to output Vulkan-related errors when this occurs. Something noteworthy is that this only occurs under winex11 and not winewayland, so I'm not sure which Wine component to blame here. Steps to reproduce: 1. Change the Graphics Mode to Vulkan (File > Studio Settings > Rendering), then restart Studio. 2. Open the Baseplate template. 3. Press Ctrl+I and insert a Script (this will create a new tab within Studio). 4. Neither of them work in Wine. 1. After performing a manual save in the game, a 'save successful' message is shown on the screen, however, if I open the <Load game> menu, it is empty. 2. When the player dies there is an option to restore the last saved game: clicking on this option results in a crash as can be seen in the attached log file. The demo version doesn't let you save the game, but it does perform an autosave, thus the crash can be reproduced with the demo too. Here's how: 1. install the demo, the game needs native d3dx9_36 and dxdiagn (bug #32163). 2. start the demo with Lockdown.exe, skip the intros. In the menu choose <Single Player> - <Start Mission> and wait until the game is loaded. 3. press '4' to instruct teammates to stay back. There will be some bad guys around the corner, step to them without shooting so the player dies pretty soon. 4. the menu with statistics appears, click on <Load Last Save>...the game crashes at this point. There's nothing serious in the terminal, the game's own log file contains: [ERROR | IkeStateMgr::SaveGame | 735] Could not open file c:/program files/ubisoft/red storm entertainment/rainbow six lockdown demo/data/save/game/autosave.sav This directory structure does exist in Wine: C:/Program Files/Ubisoft/Red Storm Entertainment/Rainbow Six Lockdown Demo/data/save Inside ../save there should be a /game directory which contains the saved games. This directory (as well as an autosave.sav) should be created when you start the first mission. For some reason the /game directory is not created in Wine. Workaround: you have to manually create the /game directory before starting the game the first time. EVB embeds application files inside the executable and hooks NtQueryInformationFile to intercept file metadata queries for its virtual files. The hook handles known info classes including FileAllInformation (class 18) but does not handle the newer FileStatInformation (class 68). When the unrecognized class 68 passes through the hook, Wine's native handler queries the raw stand-in device handle and returns incorrect data. Steps to reproduce: 1. Obtain an application packed with Enigma Virtual Box that virtualizes files (application assets embedded inside executable, not on disk). A NW.js application with EVB packing is a common example. 2. Run the packed executable under Wine: WINEPREFIX=/path/to/prefix wine application.exe Expected results: The application starts normally. EVB's file virtualization works and the application can access its embedded files. Actual results: The application fails with file access errors. For NW.js applications this manifests as "UNKNOWN, unknown error" or "TypeError: Bad argument" because GetFileInformationByHandle returns incorrect file metadata. Regression test: Bisected to the exact commit. The hook dispatches on the FileInformationClass parameter. It handles FileBasicInformation (4), FileStandardInformation (5), and FileAllInformation (18), but does NOT handle FileStatInformation (68). EVB virtualizes files by returning a \Device\Null stand-in handle from NtCreateFile. When GetFileInformationByHandle uses class 18, EVB intercepts and returns correct virtual file attributes. When it uses class 68, EVB doesn't recognize it, the call falls through to Wine's native handler which queries the raw NUL device, and the returned metadata is meaningless. Confirmed by calling NtQueryInformationFile directly on an EVB stand-in handle with a sentinel-filled buffer: - Class 5 and 18: EVB intercepts, returns correct EndOfFile (17714 bytes), zero unwritten sentinel bytes - Class 68: EVB does not intercept, falls through, returns device attributes GetFileInformationByHandle in kernelbase is NOT hooked by EVB — it relies on intercepting the NtQueryInformationFile call that kernelbase makes internally. Proposed fix: Revert the FileStatInformation change in GetFileInformationByHandle back to FileAllInformation. If the original fix for Wine-Bug #46070 regresses, a more targeted fix for that specific case would be preferable to changing the info class globally.
