This is something that is pretty slow using OpenGL and thus kills the performance. I played it a little and saw no way to optimize it without new GL extensions or 'better' drivers. Anyway, in your case, if you try with the NVIDIA drivers (instead of the NV ones), you should have some performance boost (I run at about 10 FPS on my box with a TNT2), but it's still not really playable.
