The dotted border may or may not be around the previously selected item. (Alike for multiple selected rows.) With many window managers you can switch back to a console with ALT+TAB but the screen resolution is not restored. If a game uses the resolution 640x480 and you switch back to the desktop, the resolution is still 640x480 and too low for working. Wine should restore the old resolution the desktop had before starting the game (e.g. 1280x1024) and restore the game resolution when switching back to the game.
