I even wrote some patch to avoid the crash [1], but it wasn't accepted. Maybe it is just tries to recover from it too weak. But it helped me. Can you give it a go and report results? :) If it helps, Nvidia binary drivers are the thing to blame. I wonder if OpenGL specs tell it can work at 8 bpp color depth at all? 'Make' does not find my X11 library files; I export LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/X11R6/lib to get past this; 2.
