patch [1] synchronised to current repository
I was getting into similar situation once. I even wrote some patch to avoid
the crash [1], but it wasn't accepted. Maybe it is just tries to recover from
it too weak. But it helped me. Can you give it a go and report results? :)
If it helps, Nvidia binary drivers are the thing to blame. I wonder if OpenGL
specs tell it can work at 8 bpp color depth at all?

(1) is the problem with your distro and setup.
(2) You either have to add /usr/local/lib to /etc/ld.so.conf or use --prefix
switch for the configure script.

Summary: Library-path Problems
Product: Wine
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: Andrew.Talbot(a)talbotville.com
On my (Athlon 64-bit) system, there are a couple of library-path problems:
1. 'Make' does not find my X11 library files; I export
LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/X11R6/lib to get past this;
2. The installation process puts the libwine* files in /usr/local/lib, but I
have to move them to /usr/lib to make Wine find them.
