Now, using 0.9.14 I get two messages before the game seizes.

In addition, someone posted a hack in the AppDB that does allow the game to work
with Wine. It involves patching one of the game's data files, and is detailed here:
http://aow.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/display.cgi?action=ct&f=1,4694,,1…
The tutorial, movies, and multiplayer continue to be nonfunctional.

Yes, it works on ATI cards because for those cards the first visual (ID 0x23)
has 8 bits alpha. It fails on Nvidia cards because their first visual (ID 0x21)
has 0 bits alpha

The problem is still not fully fixed (though it is partially fixed). The problem
still occurs on applications using recent versions of the installshield installer.

Wine can only work on one display at a time, so if there's any other Wine
processes running, the DISPLAY will be taken from them first.
The first process that is run should honour the DISPLAY variable.
Try "wineserver -k" to kill other wine processes.

Confirming that this bug persists in wine 0.9.14.
This is just stupid. No FIXME appears in console, no messages pop up...it just
fails to do anything.

i've worked out that the second problem is due to copy protection, but as far as
i know, they removed the cd requirement in resistance with 1.96, so thats not
the reason for the first error with the buffer.
just thought i'd throw that in since i figured it out
