I think reference counting is "per interface" in COM, at least from the view of
the application. At least I get that impression when looking into DirectPlay and
iirc that is even said on msdn somewhere, though I can't find find the link
right now.

The crash in the newest log isn't a multithreading crash, because the thread
IDs of the direct3d calls are all the same(0044). This crash seems to be a bad
read or bad jump, refcounting maybe.

Indeed, it sounds to be a multithreading problem (setviewport appears....). I
will try the Fenix' hack to see whether one can go further in this game.

Can you retry this game with the newest git / cvs code, or with the next
release(0.9.16)? The DirectDraw rewrite might affect this bug.

I've found 2 other bugs about this game which describe a simmilar problem.
According to the other bugs(2789 and 2187) this problem has occured with the
old code on certain cards / drivers.
Improving the render target locking in wined3d is on my todo list. Either by
using access traps simmilar to the dib code, or hashing the surface to detect
unnecessary changes, or by using opengl pixel buffer objects. Other games are
affected by that problem too, for example Swat3, System Shock 2 and Empire
Earth.
