|Heroes V |
------- Additional Comments From alex(a)thehandofagony.com 2006-28-07 12:22 -------
So, there are two remaining problems when starting this game:
* If Wine is set up to let the window manager control applications, Heroes V
does not appear (it shows a black screen for some time, then keeps running
with wininet errors, which are probably not related to the problem. However,
this seems to indicate that the game is still running, but does not display
anything
* It crashes when displaying intro films. In the full game, the game can play
the 'real' intro film without crashing, which can be accomplished by removing
the two logo films from an .xml file (see AppDB).

Heh. You're installing the JRE this time, not the JDK, that's why.
I was installing the JDK from the URL given above,
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp
The behavior is the same with either JDK 1.5 update 6 or 7. md5sums:
d684c84a746da6139170437d4dc638cc jdk-1_5_0_06-windows-i586-p.exe
39be9eb7243160b72ac7a0da7ea13cf0 jdk-1_5_0_07-windows-i586-p.exe
The problem happens only if you check the
"install public JRE" box in the JDK installer.
And, as you reported in comment 6, sometimes the installer
reports success even though you still see a cabinet err and an msi
'Execution halted' err.
This behavior is unchanged with today's wine from git.
Thus the installer is probably not operating properly.
I have not yet checked to see which fails it fails to install...
