Nope I didn't know about those patches. Thanks for pointing it out. I'll try
getting latest Wine from GIT and see how it goes.
At a glance, it doesn't look (to me) like those patches deal with the specific
problem I'm experiencing though.

a) 0.9.21 fails (Ubuntu Dapper) like 0.9.19.
I.e. the GLXUnsupportedPrivateRequest bug from 0.9.20 is gone, but no other
improvement.
b) With the well-working 0.9.15 and .16, it's important to use "enable desktop
double buffering" in winecfg. Otherwise, chopping/staccato effects known from
0.9.19/20/21 appear as soon as the game opens its window, making it unplayable
(but unlike the newer versions, it doesn't hang).
With 0.9.19/20/21, this switch has no effect.
