Thanks, "xrandr -s 0" does the trick.
After this, I'm also able to see that the game did _not_ crash - it's happily
playing the intro movie and I can start playing.
But it seems the problem is that the left upper corner of the game is not in the
left upper corner of the 1280x1024 screen, but the left upper corner of the game
is approx. at the position 460x460 of the screen.
This displacement means that game was not accessible after Wine resized the screen.

Summary: Castle of the Winds game
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.29.
Platform: PC
URL: http://www.exmsft.com/~ricks/
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-binary
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: altkai(a)ml1.net
Castle of the Winds is a Windows 3.1 graphical roguelike which was released as
freeware by its author (see link above.) It has crashed when exiting the first
town the past few versions, but IIRC worked circa 0.9.20 and before. Note that
you must enter shops and buy some equipment first to trigger the crash. My
winver is set at Windows 3.1, and everything else is default. Let me know if I
can provide any more information, and thank you ^^

apologies - I did not make it clear that the URL quoted is
the installer, and by default it installs quite a few
executables in C:\Program Files\R\R-2.4.1\bin ,
one of which is Rgui.exe (the main GUI for interactive users).

The crash only occurs with ALSA sound.
With OSS, game is ok (with choppy music)

I installed winzip 11.0 in 0.9.28
and it worked.
But in 0.9.29 it is not working anymore.
I tried to reinstall but the installer was also broken.
Its the same install binary that I used in 0.9.28

on 2nd tought that return value in the patch could better be 'return 0' instead
of 'return -1' ad msdn states that 0 is returned when the funtion failed.
However, question remains if it's still a hack, or really correct. Maybe one of
the "font"-guys good have a look at it.
