Hackers can run the patcher by removing wine gecko temporarily, renaming or
removing the keys in HKCU/Software/Wine/MSHTML/.

The bug has mutated.
I've just tested with Wine 0.9.48, VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.2 build 2542, AviSynth
2.5.7 and VSFilter 2.37: there are still rendering issues but completely
different ones.
Now, each line stops being rendered as soon as there is a space character. I
only see the first "word" (it can be a single dash).
There is no other bug: All visible letters are placed correctly. The text is
centered as if all letters was going to be drawn.
I tried a workaround: replacing all space by nbsp (0xA0). I am surprised it
doesn't change anything.

Log containing all wine messafes
Steam installs fine, the game also, but when I try to run it, in the moment
when the final program (I mean, not steam but hl.exe) should start I get "wine:
Unhandled page fault on write access to 0x67041984 at address 0x7ee39233
(thread 0039), starting debugger...".
I have no idea weather it's a dll problem or something else.
In attachment I put all messages from Wine

If I switch between ALSA and OSS it changes to:
fixme:d3d:IWineD3DDeviceImpl_ValidateDevice (0x16b730) : stub
So I'd say its sound related in my case...

What is your system specs?
I don't know if it is confirmed that it is ATI only, but it's a suspicion.
Maybe it's something else?
However, it must give a clue that I found the specific patch that introduced
the total freeze?

Saying Mesa is affected too is not convincing enough to me as I use Mesa/R200
and was not able to reproduce the bug. And there is no information from any
Nvidia people. So driver bugs are still suspect.
