By reversing the patch mentioned on bug #1713, I confirmed that the patch
indeed solved this bug as well. Marking as FIXED (or should it be a duplicate
of #1713 ?)

I am unable to reproduce the error message with current git (wine-0.9.47).
Maybe this bug was fixed with the same patch that fixed bug #1713
(http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1713). Could you please confirm on your
case?

with message box. Marking as FIXED.

When I start NFS MW, screen resolution changes down and the crash at the
attachment occurs. It seems to me like something in kernel32 causes this crash.

Fix for WritePrivateProfileString
After looking at things in more depths I can see that some of the permissions
are used in rather interesting ways. I believe the attached should do the
trick for both fixing the original problem (provided you re-install Thief 3)
and also work for all your test cases (which do actually seem to be rather
extensive).

At least in Wine 0.9.47, simply changing the return value back is not
sufficient to fix the bug.

It doesn't look like this bug is fixed yet. The bug also affects Picasa and
here's a way to reproduce it:
(to quote Tommy Kho)
When a photo is exported via File > Export Picture to Folder into a
non-existant directory, Picasa does the right thing and opens up Wine File.
When exporting into an existing directory, Picasa tries to open Wine File but
it fails. In Windows, both cases open up an explorer window.
