Summary: TaxCut 2006 - Crashes while starting with unhandled page
fault
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.30.
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: critical
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: jvsikora(a)adelphia.net
Note; This is a different bug than 6956.
I am able to install H&R Block Taxcut 2006. However it crashes every time as
soon as it starts. It does not matter if the app is isntalled/run as Windows
2000 or Windows 98. The request to register the program does display after the
crash.
It seems to be crashing while trying to display html. wine-gecko is installed.
If I do not install wine-gecko, the program does not crash but most of the
program is blank.
A backtrace will be included.

When trying to run SimCity 3000, although the game's music can be heard, all
wine manages to draw is a small black square at the top left corner of the
screen. Of course, the error this bug refers to comes up and, as requested
above, a debug log with x11settings will be attached.

------- Additional Comments From mk144210(a)bcm.tmc.edu 2007-11-02 15:38 -------
Based on comments on wine-devel and the fact that i have included a patch that
addresses the malware concerns (user input is required to start startup
programs, but the user can select "always" or "never" to get rid of this input),
and since the installer for Vector NTI still needs this to install its MS
components properly, and since this installer works just fine on Win98 and
WinXP, I am reopening this bug. I am not trying to do anything antagonistic, but
I think my patch addresses the issues about malware brought up, and, if not, I
believe that these can be addressed in a constructive way rather than just
saying that this functionality will never be implemented under any circumstances.

wineboot: Start items in StartUp folder on boot, includes security measures.
New patch, to prevent malware user input is solicited. User can choose whether
to run program, with options yes - runs program, no - doesn't run, always -
sets registry key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\StartupItems\FullPath to
always and will check it next time and just run program, or never - sets same
key to never and won't bother the user about program anymore.

Yeah. I just checked with a clean .wine so I'm wondering what sort of thing
could cause this to happen? (I have a 100GB+ .wine folder so I'm not in a hurry
to throw it away). I've checked clean temp folders, etc. Has there been anything
changing in MSI/OLE code that would be put in the registry in a new install of
Wine but not an old one when updating? (not sure if this is a valid bug because
I've not broken Wine at all, so I'm wondering is installing a certain app has
done something to Wine which is causing it to act odd, unearthing a bug as it were).

I installed the native MSI using the wiki and now the HL2 installer appears,
but it gets stuck preparing the installation and nothing happens.

Please do NOT change the original reported Wine version, only bump the bug every
half-dozen Wine releases to point out if it's still unfixed.
