Ambro, Wine has two drivers for the joystick. One uses evdev devices
(/dev/input/event*) and the other uses joydev devices (/dev/js*). In these four
patches, the real changes are in the evdev driver (joystick_linuxinput.c). They
fix the problem for me when I allow Wine to access the event devices, but not
for the joydev driver (behaviour is unchanged).
Maybe your system isn't allowing read access on the event devices?

The wiki entry is a workaround, not a fix. It is not acceptable for fglrx to
randomly crash (running valgrind on wine is enough to cause a kernel crash).
Despite the security implications ATI claim that it is actually the user space
code at fault here. If that is true, then it should be fixed. Until that happens
this bug should stay open.

I have applied Dean Kusler's keyboard.c patch to win 0.9.30 and tested it with
World Of Warcraft 2.0.6 and Dean's patch fixes this bug (6323). You can now
press the 0 key and jump up & down as much as you like, not just the once as
before the patch.
I assume Dean's submitted this patch for inclusion in 0.9.31.
Thanks Dean.

Proposed patch
Repeating Keith's words, this patch fixes the issue, as far as I could see.
Note: this was already submitted to wine-patches.

That doesn't matter. If the game doesn't install then that needs to be filed as
a bug (which I believe it already is). ONLY things that are installed WITH WINE
and INTO WINE are supported, NOT LOKI. Same reason ies4linux isn't supported by
us. If it doesn't work then take it up with Loki. This is only for pure Wine.

Creating a "fake" /dev/js0 (pointing to some input device that does exist) made
it start. But now it crashes in the main screen.
Could be the fake joystick device, but I can't test with a real joystick as my
computer does not have a old style joystick port anymore.
Anyway, wine reports something wrong to the game as it works just fine under
real Windows without a joystick.

Good to see someone is looking into this.
Anyway, I made clean install of 0.9.30 (removed my ~/.wine) and installed the
demo version. It's still the same old message:
"DirectInput CreateDevice joystick failed."
And I've tested it the normal way and with the virutal desktop as instructed, no
difference.
