You have to install this program on Wine, and not run anything from windows
partition.

In case this is useful, I had a repeatable crash on ubuntu 7.04 with wine 0.9.38
when going to battle.net. Was able to fix the problem entirely by installing MS
core TTF fonts.
On most of my machines I'm used to rsyncing over microsoft fonts and doing
ttmkfdir. On ubuntu (long time user of freebsd and occasional debian here,
recently put ubuntu on the laptop), I was pleased to see apt-get install
msttcorefonts; fc-cache -fv did the work for me.

The other options work as expected
this severely limits the use of this application as you cannot create a flash
file to work on.

Some googling around turned up a couple pages like this one:
http://www.ac3.edu.au/SGI_Developer/books/XLib_PG/sgi_html/ch11.html
that says XNFontSet is required when creating an input context.
But the Xlib programming manual:
http://tucupi.cptec.inpe.br/sx4/sx4man2/g1ae02e/chap13.html
states that if XNFontSet is unspecified, the default is determined by the input
method.
I experimented a bit and tried calling XCreateIC without the XNFontSet variable
and it did not seem to make a difference on my system. Maybe it is ok to just
remove the call entirely?

I didn't try that. I apt-get installed necessary packages to get rid of the
"configure" warnings at the end of the ./configure --verbose output. I got rid
of all the potentially relevant ones (e.g. I didn't bother with CUPS) but to no
avail.
I ultimately "solved" the problem two different ways: I set up apache to work
as a proxy server (which got Firefox and Opera working) ...and then I got tired
of problems like this (with Wine, and with other software) and switched back to
32 bit linux. I've had no problems whatsoever with Wine on 32-bit.

Yeah it sure was. I almost want to keep it around as an example of how not to
write bugs...

Have you tried "apt-get build-dep wine"? That should handle the missing
dependencies for compiling.
