I tested again.
I do get this error when using the desktop icon, but it's not because of the
path info. Doing the $PWD test confirms it's changing paths correctly.

What desktop environment are you using (gnome/kde/else)? You might want to
create small test script to output $PWD into a file and test working directory
with it. If there are any problems - report that to your distro.
In other words this isn't a Wine bug.

Then this bug is fixed. File new bugs for any other problems you're seeing.

I successfully installed MS Office in Wine 0.9.53 and got Word and Excel run,
but VBA and macros do not work. It also does not uninstall.

Running the desktop shortcut doesn't trigger it for me. It works without
issue.

One source of confusion with this has been that the game installs a Desktop
icon and a programs menu icon to run the game, but using either of these
triggers the problem. My guess is that these aren't changing directories
correctly (although I looked at the shortcut info, the directory information is
correctly set).

Summary: Text display is corrupted in several applications
Product: WineHQ Apps Database
Version: unspecified
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: minor
Priority: P2
Component: appdb-unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: susancragin(a)earthlink.net
Within the past 3 days, the new git has stopped displaying certain text
correctly, and displays random plus-signs, boxes, etc., instead.
This happens to me in certain installation screens of Dragon NaturallySpeaking,
and also in TED Notepad. TED is a simple Notepad replacement, and should
display well.
I have posted several screenshots on the web.
My current wine:
