You might want to create small test script to output $PWD into a file and test working directory with it. If there are any problems - report that to your distro. This happens to me in certain installation screens of Dragon NaturallySpeaking, and also in TED Notepad. TED is a simple Notepad replacement, and should display well. I have posted several screenshots on the web.
