Summary: Call of Duty 2 AA only works with Nvidia driver
V100.14.19
Product: Wine
Version: CVS/GIT
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: critical
Priority: P2
Component: directx-d3d
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: rmuncrief(a)comcast.net
I'm running Ubuntu Gutsy AMD64 with an Nvidia 7800GT video card, and have a
working Wine 1.0-rc2 installation running Call of Duty 2 with Nvidia driver
version 100.14.19. All texture and antialias settings work flawlessly so long
as I use backbuffer instead of fbo.
However I've discovered that antialiasing only works with this driver version.
It doesn't work if I use versions 169.12 (the standard driver for Hardy, and
default Gutsy driver with Envy) or 173.08 (the latest beta driver). And I know
about the FBO/AA bug, so I'm using backbuffer (although I did try fbo just in
case).
But the really bad news is that AA doesn't work for any of the games I have
unless I use 100.14.19. This includes FarCry 2, Flat Out 2, Half Life 2, Half
Life Episode One, and Half Life Lost Coast. However, I'm only filing a bug for
one game because the error output for all these games is the same using any
driver other than 100.14.19. And of course I did full recompiles and
installations when changing drivers, twice, to make sure this was indeed a hard
error. I also tried the latest git, and even installed Hardy and attempted to
use it with it's default driver V169.12, but the results were the same. Here's
the error output I get when attempting to run any game with 2X AA with any
driver other than 100.14.19. (I didn't create an attachment because it's very
short):

Firefox (2.0.0.14) and Seamonkey (1.1.9) won't keep windows maximised, under
fluxbox (version 0.9.14-1.2, the package provided by debian stable).
The window is made slightly smaller (by a few pixels) every time a new tab is
opened, every time I switch from one tab to another, and every time a link is
followed.

The application "Launchpad Enhanced" requires GdipCreateFontFamilyFromName,
which is not implemented in the built-in gdiplus. As a result of this issue,
vcrun2005 must be installed - resulting in graphics and threading problems.

All the popup dialogs in Firefox 3 rc1 (and earlier betas) that
I've seen are clipped on the bottom, badly enough that they're
hard to use. I'll attach a screenshot. Installing corefonts doesn't help.

Half-Life, Call of Duty 2 bisect output
The full Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2 Episode 1 Steam games, and Demo Call of
Duty 2, have black screens during part of their operation caused by the
attached commit identified by bisect. This graphical regression error occurred
between 0.9.60 and 0.9.61, and is still present in rc1.
For the Half Life games the entire introduction videos are black, with an
occasional white flash, but the sound can be heard perfectly, and once the
narrative is done the game can be played normally.
For the Call of Duty demo the spinning "Activision" letters and dancing "I" are
black during startup, but again the sound can be heard perfectly, and once the
logo stuff is over the startup screen appears normally and the game plays fine.
I just tested with the latest git as of this morning and the error still
persists.
My relevant software/hardware:
Ubuntu Gutsy AMD64
Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLI (nForce 4 based) MB
Nvidia 7800GT 256MB video card, driver version 100.14.19 (also tried with
latest Envy drivers).

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12548
Summary: New default for /proc/sys/vm/mmap_min_addr clashing with
wine preloader
Product: Wine
Version: CVS/GIT
Platform: Other
URL: https://launchpad.net/bugs/114025
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: loader
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: dank(a)kegel.com
The problem
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2008-0600
prompted distributions to raise the default for /proc/sys/vm/mmap_min_addr
or even DEFAULT_MMAP_MIN_ADDR to 64K from 0.
This causes the following error message when starting (some?) wine apps:
Problem with wine preloader: Warning: failed to reserve range
00000000-60000000
See discussion:
https://launchpad.net/bugs/114025http://kerneltrap.org/Linux/Patching_CVE-2008-0600_Local_Root_Exploithttp://kerneltrap.org/Linux/2.4.36_Stable_Release
You can check to see if you're on an affected system
by doing "cat /proc/sys/vm/mmap_min". If that succeeds, and its value
is nonzero, you're probably running into this.
To work around the problem temporarily, you can change this value
with the command
sudo sysctl -w vm.mmap_min_addr=0
but that value gets reset at boot. To work around the problem more
persistantly, also edit the file /etc/sysctl.conf like this:
# protect bottom 64k of memory from mmap to prevent NULL-dereference
# attacks against potential future kernel security vulnerabilities.
# (Added in kernel 2.6.23.)
-vm.mmap_min_addr = 65536
+vm.mmap_min_addr = 0
http://kerneltrap.org/Linux/2.4.36_Stable_Release suggests using
a value of 4096 for this.
"Advanced Windows", 3rd edition, says that the memory area 0 to 4095
is not mapped anyway in windows (it's a guard page).
So maybe when Wine is installed, we could somehow change that value
to 4096, and have Wine's preloader happily continue if it can't
map the bottom page of RAM.
