Currently, we tend to tell people to start with a new .wine directory after
updates. For wine 1.0 and after, we should probably have some tool to handle
this more gracefully.

Yes, in Diablo (original 1.09, IIRC) the menus are still black with Wine
0.9.61. I've memorised the menus in vmware player. It plays fine in Wine after
blind-walking the menus and clicking once. Just spent a couple of hours
playing, again.

I'm experiencing this problem in AvP1 Alien Demo (see this bug
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12944 for a download link of the demo).
If I have virtual desktop disabled the mouse stops "working" if I move it too
far to the right/left/whatever. I'm currently compensating it through angular
movement via the keyboard and "finetuning" with the mouse. That's of course
horrible to play.
If vdesktop is on I can better see the problem. You can clearly see that the
mouse escapes the windows if it's moved too far. As soon as it escapes the
window no more input is generated in the game. Upon inserting the cursor into
the vdesktop area again input continues.
