I think this bug isn't there anymore. The only errors I get in the full version
of Deus Ex are the following ones:

Yes, I used a fresh wine directory and a new game install, and the models still
do not appear. However, the game no longer crashes at the character select
screen anymore like it did per comment #8.

That plan works for me. Bug 9512 is still an issue and my earlier post stating
it was still a problem was in relation to that bug. If this is indeed fixed,
the two must be unrelated.

It's fixed for me (also 1.0-rc3).
I propose that bug 9512 be re-opened as it seems to be a different problem.
That is, the "hint style pop ups" described sound like balloon tips (as opposed
to tooltips).
