Summary: Very bad performance in Monolith games (NOLF, F.E.A.R.)
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.12
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: directx-d3d
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: zarquon(a)t-online.de
Many Monolith games show very bad performance (at least in some levels). The
most extreme one is naturally F.E.A.R. (although AFAIK I have everything set to
medium and optimized my WINE settings according to AppDB, e.g. hardware shaders
and offscreen rendering to FBO), but since I also encountered rather hefty
performance problems in the much older "No one lives forever" series I think
the bottleneck is probably code typically used in many Monolith games,
isolating which may be much simpler in older games like NOLF, as opposed to
pretty cutting edge stuff like F.E.A.R.
I have an x86_64 dual core Linux system with 4 GB of main memory and an Nvidia
GF7900GS with 512MB RAM, which can run even Prey under Wine like a charm. In
F.E.A.R. OTOH, frame rates dropped to something like 4 FPS on the most extreme
occasions, despite medium settings. When I monitored my graphics card's
temperatures during one session, it looked like it wasn't really doing much, so
the bottleneck has to be somewhere in the emulation layer.
Looks like you can download a demo version of NOLF here:
http://www.fileplanet.com/49582/40000/fileinfo/No-One-Lives-Forever-Demo
and NOLF2 would be here:

Screenshot of error message
Atari Trivial Pursuit Unhinged causes an unhandled exception.
Oddly, it seems to continue for a while but fails with a SecuRom error.
A nocd workaround just caused a DirectMusic error, so no workaround.

Wine's console output
On a working box with Windows XP which can run Transformers very happily, it
won't even start on WINE, saying there's no pixel shaders 1.1 support.
The game requires d3dx9_31.dll and xinput1_3 to be copied on the game's root
folder (or wine's c windows\system32) in order to keep running (else it says it
can't find those files).
After that's done, the following errors occur (shown in attachment).

Summary: Extremely slow character rendering in all apps over
freenx
Product: Wine
Version: 1.1.12
Platform: PC-x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: kkant(a)xmission.com
Wine 1.1.12 on Fedora 10 x64 renders fonts/characters extremely slowly when
operating over a remote freenx session. This affects all apps, including
winecfg. Each character is rendered pixel by pixel in an agonizingly slow
manner; it makes me think that raw bitmaps are being sent over the freenx link,
rather than character data with a fontname. The symptoms appear anywhere text
is rendered in an app: menus, text fields, lists, etc etc etc. The bug can be
confirmed by running winecfg.
I experienced this bug with Wine 1.1.12, Freenx server 0.7.3 (the latest
version in the Fedora repository as of Jan 22 2009), and the NoMachine nx
client for windows v3.3.0-3 (downloadable from nomachine.com).
This is a new bug in 1.1.12 that did not exist in the previous Wine version I
was using (1.1.9). I reproduced this bug several times after removing my
~/.wine folder and reinstalling 1.1.12. I reconfirmed that the older version
1.1.9 does NOT have this bug by removing version 1.1.12, removing the ~/.wine
folder, and reinstalling version 1.1.9.

Summary: Zoo Tycoon: Crashes After Adding Terrain & Other Objects
Product: Wine
Version: 1.0.0
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: stevebohlen(a)gmail.com
Game crashes when adding some objects, most notably terrain. Can reproduce
pretty regularly. Terrain additions seem to cause crashes when 1) There are
other recently added objects nearby, and 2) When more than 2 terrain squares
have been added before "committing" the changes with that menu selection.
Wine version is 1.00. Have tested on Ubuntu 8.04 with integrated graphics card
and PCLinuxOS 2007 with ATI card with the same results.
