Screenshot
The statistics screen shown after performing a disc quality scan (disc quality
-> start with a non-blank CD or DVD inserted) is no longer readable in 1.2-rc1,
due to most of the text being missing. A single 0 is visible, but misplaced.

It is, but doesn't have much to do with critical sections. The NFS games screw
around with the FPU control word, unmasking some exceptions. That patch masks
them again in a convenient place, but it's unlikely to be the correct place.
(And this really doesn't have a whole lot to do with this bug.)

I have modified SetDisplayMode in ddraw.c to reject the wanted BPP and always
use 16bpp. Screenshots showing this have been attached. I have only tested this
in Emulate a Virtual Desktop mode.
One more thing to add, when playing with the Blt and Unlock methods (from
surface.c in wined3d.dll) - adding wglFlush to them, I was able to even get a
cursor for a while, though, the cursor's movement was restrained and it always
reverted to the center of the screen. I can not reproduce this yet...

Yes. I just submitted new test results with 1.2-rc1.

I have this problem on two machines- a Dell Studio 1555 laptop with ATi HD 4500
512MB Card and a custom built desktop which is an AMD Phenom II x4 with AMD
chip set (and also an ATI card on-board).
The problem occurs using both fglrx and the RadeonHD open source drivers. I am
currently running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit. I had the same issue with Ubuntu 9.10
64bit previously.
Using Wine 1.2 RC1.

That patch looks like a hack to me. What it means is that something inside
context_set_draw_buffer is not properly protected with critical section.
